Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) New trans'

My other ’99 CTD [that I gave to my son] is in need of a new transmission and TC. He doesn’t do any heavy towing and mainly just uses it for backpacking trips to the Sierras’ and occasional trips to Baja. I would like for him to go with a company that is reliable and stands by their product as he does travel into remote areas with his family. The first thing that comes to mind is Goerend or ATS but they are both out of state and he lives near San Diego Ca. I should also mention that this is an early birthday present from dad so he’s not in a budget situation. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
