got a question about new transfer cases - NV271 and NV273. I understand these are identical except for the electronic shift in the NV273. How do these compare (robustness and reliability) with the 2002 HD transfer case, isn't it the NV241HD?

I found the NV web site and, well, there is all smiles for the new ones :D

The NV241HD is rated at 5, 555 ft lbs input torque. The New 271 and 273 are both rated at 7890 ft lbs and are 20 lbs heavier. Now don't that beat all -- DC actually built in a heavier duty component.

To make these numbers meaninful, consider that with a 5. 63 1st gear an engine developing 555 ft lbs at the flywheel would translate to about 3,124 ft. lbs. input to the xfer case. we got lots 'o margin.

The 271/273 is VERY tough. Ford uses it on the SuperDuty, and I have not seen one fail yet. I've rebuilt LOTS of 241/241HD cases though... The 271/273 have a very robust case, and the internals are the same way. Don't get me wrong, the 241/241HD is a good case, but seems to be a bit more fragile.
