Ok, all ye mechanics of great knowledge, here's one for you. Last month my transfer pump started ticking REAL loud. Put up with it for a few weeks and then put a new one on.
After a few weeks of quiet diesel rattling, the damn transfer pump is again ticking. This seems to happen after I've done a few WOT and then the ticking stays around for a day or
so, then goes away!!! I won't get another ticking spell until I hammer the throttle again.
Am I somehow starving the transfer pump and sticking something or what?
New pump bad?
Thanks in advance.

Mine did that after Cummins replaced the injection pump. It turns out that the fuel return hose was crimped (blocking flow). I would suggest that you might check both the supply and return hoses for crimps and leaks. If not these, it could be a bad overflow valve or a plugged fuel filter. I'd replace the filter first and also check the fuel hoses before replacing the overflow valve.

I'm beginning to get a loud ticking that sounds like a sticky hydraulic lifter, but I know this isnt what we have, and besides, I checked the valve clearances twice, they are ok. It seems to come from the back of the pan somewhere, or the convertor housing. It develops only when fully warmed up. It sounds like a rod knock might in a tiney motor, like mabe a Briggs&Stratton, but is mostly onlyu audible from insdie the truck with windows up, as its masked by the din of the other clatter with em down!

Please tell me this is from the "transfer pump", then tell me what THAT is? Is that the "lift pump" that feeds the injection pump?

I have a 2wd '94 2500 auto with 90M on her, no towing.

I'm worried.

Hmm, I've been noticing a noise like that, too, recently, exactly how lhdurham described. Sounds like a hydraulic lifter in a gas V-8 that's not getting enough oil, and it's easier to hear with the windows up. On mine, it seems to only be there when the motor is cold, although, it could get masked by the stereo. I'll have to check it out. My truck has close to 60K on it. Anybody know what's the lifespan of a lift pump?
Glad I noticed this post, I never thought about the lift pump being the source of that noise.

Andy, I don't KNOW the source of the noise, am only hoping its that pump ... sure hope some of the experienced guys can help us out!

I changed the fuel filter today, noise still came back when she warmed up. I got all over that motor with a listening tube (1/2"x18" length of stiff water hose) and it seems loud and sharp right at the backside of the comverter housing where it joins the rear mainbearing area. No sign of it at lift pump or bottom of oil pan itself, but it sounds so sharp it seems like a little steel bobweight striking something at regular intervals inside the rear main or flexplate system.

Help!?!?

mine does the same thing, whenever i change the fuel filter it goes away for a little bit then it comes back, would love to know what it is, I also installed the 1/2 inch fuel line kit and use the 3/8 line for the return so every thing is clear and free flowing. Every one has said that we have really good lift pumps unlike the 24v. Would like to know what that ticking noise is.
