I was changing the oil after a camping trip towing my 5er up in the woods /mountain passes/ghost towns. I found some oil dripping near my right front tire . Traced it to my front diff breather tube behind the air filter. Checked the fluid level and it was still good. What would cause the front diff to blow oil out the breather tube?

Odd. Mine did that once, too. Cleaned it and kept an eye on it; it hasn't happened again.



Shortly after that, now that I think of it, my left axle seal started leaking. Probably a coincidence, but I thought I'd mention it.

The vent tube has a valve on the end, if it gets clogged or stuck, the diff. will build-up pressure, and either blow an axle seal, or start speewin' out the tube, whichever has the least resistance. Make sure on both front and rear axles as well as the transfer-case's vent valves, are free spinning, just spin it with yer fingers to make sure they're clear.

Casey, it seems like they all do it at least once. Seems like it has to do with getting on just the right tilt. My '95 has no valve just a straight tube, I suspect your '96 is the same.

If you get even a very tiny amount of water in the differential case, it will boil when the oil gets hot, creating steam that has to get out of there. Steam takes up 12000 times as much space as water so it has to go somewhere.
