Just purchased a used 2000 Ram 2500 with 62,000 miles and NV4500HD 5spd trans, 241 transfer case with dana 60 front axle & 80 rear axle. Of course 24V 5. 9L TD eng. I had a 97 12V which was a hole different type of diesel engine. I'd like to get to know what are some of the problem areas. I have seen the lift pump concerns with this engine, but what about driveline concerns, rear main seal, oil pumps, etc, etc. Currently this is a fully stock truck but soon to be upgraded any help in learning the qwarks will help guide my direction in tricking the truck out. thanks Bob

Lift pumps really are the biggy with these motors. The vp44 injection pump hasnt proven to be the best, but making sure that it is supplied with enough fuel pressure seems to be key in keeping it healthy. Knock on wood, my forehead whatever, i have 100k of hard miles on mine and all seems well. Put a fuel pressure gauge and go for it. The rest of the drive train is the same as your old truck. Unless you had an auto, then the rear would have been a D70. If you hot rod it, you will probably end up upgrading the clutch, but that is no big deal really.

thanks rubberneck,

my old truck was an auto and seems like a fuel pressure gauge will be part of my gauge package. based on the pressure readings maybe a inline booster pump will be inorder. first upgrade is the gauge package, new cold air setup and exhaust, then on to a chip/electronic controller.
