I will probably be getting a new 2003 or 2004 Dodge Cummins. Just wondering if I get an auto if I can get by with just a TC & VB. Or do I even need one with the new 48? Truck will very likely have a few more "donkey power" than stock. Nothing to wild, because this new truck will be used extensively for work and will be sold in a couple of years. Upgrades will not be more than a box and some injectors. We know how that goes! LOL All my extra cash will go to the old goat! 98 12v... .

6-speed is an option, but not one I really want to do, but not wanting to sink a ton of cash into a truck I know I am not going to keep is not a good idea to me. That is if I need to get a full blown aftermarket transmission. Clutch might be cheaper!

The 48RE is improved, but if you add a lot of power, you will be going through the same old drill--torque converter, valve body, etc. The new transmission reportedly has the same torque converter part number as the 47RE.

If you are able to shift, I recommend the 6 speed.
