The major item I would insist on is the existence of rear discs. These came in in 2001. 5. These trucks need four wheel disc brakes to stop.

My neighbor owns a 01 and loves it, It has drum brakes and pulls a 35 foot 5th wheel very heavy. He has no problem with towing and stoping.

I would have no problem buying one.

I had a 2001 that I drove up and down the mountain roads with a trailer loaded to the hilt with steel/iron all the time, no rear disc's and no complaints about stoping. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Ask the current owner about the maintenance/service history of the truck, mine was an auto also and I R&R the trans around 105K. I'm sure it could have gone a little longer but I always had some heavy weight in the truck and my foot was always denting the floor.

That being said just go over the truck front to rear top to bottom, there are alot of clean 2nd gen trucks still floating around out there. Take your time and find the one that you feel has been taken care of and your comfortable with.

I know a guy (dsherman) who has a very low mile, clean silver one, he's waiting on his new DURAMAX and he'd probable sell his cheap!!!! JOKING and running away
