I have not been on tdr in awhile. I am thinking of trading in my 03 Dodge on a new truck. I was wondering about the pros and cons of a new truck. I know that they have EGR. I was wondering about any other issues concerning the new 6. 7 engine. I would also like to know about the new automatic transmission compared to a manual transmission.

Thanks,

Rhino50:)

The engine, transmission, cab are wonderful. I has stump pulling torque. It is by far the best overall CTD I've ever owned, and that's about twice the nuumber on my sig.

On the downside, it is not a great choice for a daily commuter. If not worked hard you are likely to be faced with issues involving the emissions system. It does not have the fuel economy of your '03. Similarly equipped trucks will suffer a 1-2 MPG penalty with the new model.

For towing it's awesome. The five speed auto transmission mates very well to the engine. You can always find the perfect gear for towing. If the shifting logic doesn't pick just the right gear you can manually select just the right gear. Overall, the shift points seem to work pretty well. The integrated exhaust brake works better than any I've had before. You can pretty much drive with it on all the time and save lots of brake wear. Also, it's pretty hard for your speed to get out of hand, it's very effective.

The 6. 7 is super quiet. It's a sophisticated electronically controlled engine, so not too many things for a shade tree mechanic to tinker with. The computer is too smart and if you monkey with things it's likely to through a code, or worse.

For economy, you can't beat the old twelve valves. For comfort and pulling the new trucks are light years ahead.

What kind of milage are we seeing with the new trucks.
Thanks
Mike

I see about 10 MPG pulling a 16,000 lb fifth wheel. With no load, about 16 MPG at 65 MPH Freeway, 14-15 MPG City/highway combined. Straight city driving would probably be 13-14 MPG. These are no B. S. numbers. Some will say they do better. Probably getting thier numbers from the lie-o-meter in the truck. It usually shows me about 1 MPG better than actual.

By comparison, my '93 gets between 18. 5 and 20 MPG unloaded all the time. My old '95 did even better onn the highway because of the lock up torque converter. The best tank I ever saw on that rig was 23 MPG. I was doing a 65 MPH open highway run.

I have a 08 automatic and pull a 14500 lb 5ver. It is an awesome truck!

I agree with the posts. Get the 373 rear axel and you will be happier than the 411.

I can Fly down the Hwy at 80 mph and be right at 2100 rpm's with 410's my best hand calc mpg was 18-19. 5 and that was doing 875 miles in 12 hour's none stop except once for fuel and bathroom stop's

I have an 03 also and am looking at buying an 08 before the end of the year. Are there any issues with things like oil change or is it pretty straight forward like the 5. 9. Also, what is the oil capacity on the 6. 7? Thanks,

Kevin McD.

The oil capacity is 12qts (including filter).
