i have just lost my 2500 97 4x4 to fire , and am considering going for a 24 valve , could you tell me what to look for and the changes i can expect from what i have now

Well probably the biggest response you'll get on this thread regarding major changes is going to be the lift pump problems. They are notorious for failure on the 24 valvers and I guess most everyone has to replace it sooner or later. Also, you won't have the dowel pin problems on the 24 valve trucks. I've also heard that the 12 valve models get a litter better mileage than the 24 valve trucks but I don't have any info to back that up. From what I have seen, power is cheaper on the 12 valve trucks for whatever reason also. But you do get a little boost with the 24 valve models, they're good for 20 to 30 more horsepower.



Someone add to this, I'm sure there's more out there than this.

I think a 12v would be a wise investment. The 24s are great. Especially with their on the fly adjustability. The 12vs are more reliable, speaking directly in reference to the lift pump. The 12vs are also cheaper to upgrade. Have better low end torque and better fuel mileage. Best of both worlds is a 98 12v.



Weird sidenote. The modified ecms for the 98. 5 24v, that never hit the market, were 3 times more expensive than any other year(going from MY very corrupted memory). If anyone ever did figure out how to make one. It would be too much money.

Dowel pins are still a problem on some 24 valvers.

You might also try to stay away from the #53 blocks.

The 4 wheel disk brakes are awesome on the 01. 5's and up. If you get a 4wd you might want to look for a 241HD case (stronger) and make sure it has a CAD on the front axle, some 02's dont have it.



I have a 24V and a 12V both are my favorite truck.





Ditto on the #53 block, seems to be a risky deal.

That would be a helluva trip - Texas to Australia. Wonder how many hotshotters would jump at that one?

dear members,

thanks for the info on the 24 valves , and to tejas deezul for his offer which i would say yes to if it was an auto . (what fun it would be to deliver ) . as far as the fire is concerned ,i was in the outback on a sealed road and my young son noticed smoke out from under the dash . i stopped the truck and got him and his grandfather out , and she burst into flames . it took an hour for the firebrigade to get out to us , by then there was nothing left of her . the alloy racks and roo bars were melted on the road. it was the most frightening thing i have ever been involved in .

ps if anyone has a nice black 01-03 2500 4x4 lwb laramie 24 valve with a new lift pump and low miles ,(did i mention it needs to be right hand drive) i would love to hear from them .
