hey guys a new tsb came in about the altenator support bracket

being cracked.

this bulletin involves replacing the bracket with a revised bracket.

parts required:

1 05086742ab bracket

2 05093136aa bolt

2 04429114 bolt

1 05127471aa clip

this tsb applies to 2003 dr trucks equipped with a 5. 9l 24-valve

diesel sales code etc, or eth and built on or before feb 13, 2003

and engine serial numbers prior to 57013271.

symptom: may experience an accessory drive belt squeal during

normal driving conditions.

you can find the engine serial number on the data plate, located

on the drivers side of the valve cover.

Mine, Fireman's and Casey Balvert's were cracked. The new bracket is cast and machined. A big improvement over the original. There were hairline cracks on both sides of the bend on the original stamped junk. Pretty easy to spot because there was a rust line where the crack is.

tsb recall

Hi James,Dean,

My serial # is 569#####,my 3500 was born 12/10/02,So I probably have the honor of joining this recall. But in the mean time I looked at the altern. bracket,&could see nothing visibly wrong yet. It is stamped out, belt still tight,& no noise. I've done the co-2 recall,so why not another? How long did the fix take? Thanks for the heads up. Pat

Thank you mr. Jlevesque

I checked my alt. bracket and it has a hair line crack that runs

across and down the back side of the bracket,It did not show up to well until I used a bright light. Job well done, you just made my

TDR dues worthwhile! GWD:) :) :)

Had my truck at the dealers this last week to have the exhaust brake installed and have the reflash for the cruise control done. They called Monday 5/5/03 to tell me it was ready. I had read about this recall and I gave them the details, they checked and said they did not have any info from D/C on it. Would have been nice to have gotten them done at the same time. Am getting ready to put a bunch of miles on it in the next month to six weeks, hope it holds together.

MR. Crow: I hope you can replace that alt bracket before you leave.

Here I am out on the left coast,And I guess Iwill try and limp back

to Colorado with this cracked bracket. GWD

This isn't a recall, yet. Some brackets may not be faulty. I think that mine would have taken quite a while to actually fail. By the way the part is from Cummins.

Dean

this is a tsb only, which means the dealer is not supposed to

change the bracket unless it is actually cracked, which i think is

crap. so if you go to the dealer don't be surprised if they deny the

repair, raise hell to get it replaced, because it will crack eventually.

the repair will take about 1/2 hour.

James

With the amount of failed brackets I would expect a recall soon. I think that the hold up could be the availability of the new and vastly improved model. My bracket came in right away but I am still waiting for the cable clip that is on back order. I don't see any damage done if the bracket failed competely, but it could sure be inconvenient.

Dean,

I would not delay the repair for the cable clip which can be added at any time later. I used a wire tie until the replacement clip is available. I will post some pictures of both brackets later this morning.

Casey

Casey,

Mine has just a couple of small hairline cracks at the bend. I am not planning any long trips and I will monitor it. If the cracks get much worse I will put the bracket on with the wire ties, otherwise I will wait a reasonable amount of time for the clip.

Dean

The tsb says that they will replace cracked support brackets on vehicles made on or before February 13th ("if the alternator support bracket is cracked, perform the Repair Proceedures"). They may be trying to get the ones with an actual problem out of the way before they have a recall? The trucks made after that date have the new bracket. It is unlikely that a new truck made before that date with no mileage would have a cracked bracket.

Brackets

Note the hairline cracks in the radius of the bend. I really think that all brackets of this type will eventually fail due to vibration. Easy job to replace it though.

The new bracket is cast iron and much more up to the job.

Thank's for the post, went out and just checked mine, cracked on both sides. The cracks on mine are longer than on Casey's photo. I am off to the dealer tomorrow to make an appointment to have it replaced. I hope they have the part and don't give me any trouble since there is not a recall yet. I took delivery on my truck on October 25th, 2002 I now have 5600 miles. I hope this will be the last of the problems with the 03.

Checked mine this morning. There's a hairline crack on the back curve that looks identical to the one in the picture. Guess I'll call the dealer tomorrow. :(

Turned 'puter on this afternoon to look for the TSB # for the check gages light and saw this info. Go out and look and mine is cracked all the way across right next to the lift hook!! Oh well, just another item for the st**ler to do tomorrow (hopefully) along with the other 7 items on my list!!! Is this place great or what!!?
