First off i'd like to say hello. I've read here for a long time but this is my first post now. As my sig says what i have, The engine was missin the plate on it so i dont know what the stock hp rating was, but think i figured it as bein 190 by the pump numbers. It was also a 91 engine by the emissions plate on the timing cover yet. The fuel mods ive done is slid the stock plate full forward, and adjusted the star wheel. If i change either of those two back my turbo spoolup is horrible slow off of idle, but how they are set now its decent, not the best but decent but i have alot of smoke. and the egts are horribly high also. It didnt make much difference with the stock injectors either. I drive this truck everyday to work, and i also pull a trailer about once a week that ranges anywhere from 2000 to 10,000 pounds. Egts runnin empty are about 400-500 at idle warmed up, 900-1100 at 55-60, and 1000 to 1200 loaded, if i'm goin hard i can easily hit 1300 just driving in town. I'm not sure what i can do to keep my spoolup and lower the egts, intake and exhaust is pretty free, the turbo i have is what i believe to be an H1C, boost runnin 55 is around 5, and i can hit about 25-30 gettin on it. I have tried runnin a buddies hy35 off of his 02 automatic, spoolup was better but egts were even worse and i couldnt take the whistle anymore. Sorry if i'm confusing here, but im also confused...

I didn't think the P7100 came on a dodge until 94 but you need to find out what that pump came out of to get reliable advice. 90hp injectors with 25-30lbs seems like your a little light on boost for such big injectors. Sounds like a fun truck to me.

Yeah it is a fun truck to drive. On the p7100, the engine came out of a school bus, i was surprised to see that it was a 91 when i saw it had the inline pump on it. When i get home from work tonight i'll try to get the numbers from the pump so mabey someone can identify it a little here to be sure what i have.

Being out of a bus it may be higher than a 190. I will see if I can find out what our school buses had for a pump in 91

pump numbers

Well lets see if any of these numbers match anything, this is what i had wrote down on a piece of paper from before i put the engine in, on the one line 16811612, then i had a long list 0402 736 810, then i had just three numbers wrote 927. I cant get to the pump right now to get the numbers from it to verify anything, air compressors in the way...

get the serial number off of the engine. it is on the side of the block near the oil cooler there should be a flat spot on the block with numbers stamped into it. if you get me the engine serial number I shouls be able to get you the information.

Is the tag on the timing cover missing?

Which way are you turning the starwheel? It sounds like it's bottomed out and the turbo can't light because of too much fuel. Try turning the starwheel towards the firewall. (picture a bolt with the head on the left as you look at the engine, the nut is the starwheel) Go 1 or 2 turns at a time and try driving it between adjustments. At some point you should be able to almost get rid of the smoke by adjusting it. There should be a happy point where it leaves good and doesn't smoke too much.

Good luck!

Ive messed with the starwheel before, and the problem i get is that i just dont get the spoolup untill i get higher speeds, and when i do get spoolup it smokes like an sob, but i ran into a problem here tonight so my truck will probley sit for a little while, pullin trailer my clutch started slippin pretty bad so i get to replace that, then i'll get back on the egt and smoke issue. I have to pull the engine out with the transmission and i have some oil leaks i have to contend with so i'll take a good look at the inside of the engine.

I do want to know more about the serial stamped on the block, i've heard of this, looked for this, but cant find it. I even looked at my 89 cummins engine out of a ford medium duty sittin in the barn. Mabey i'm lookin at the wrong spot, so if you could get a picture of where it is that would be wonderful, thanks.

Your turbo is equivalent to an HX35 so you can push it up to 35 psi. You can actually get over 40 psi out of them but they're not built to withstand that much boost, though some folks get away with it. I would try plugging the wastegate so you can get more air and more boost to burn more of that fuel. Might slow your EGTs but I think they will be high until you upgrade your turbo. Have you tried adjusting your pre-boost fuel screw at the back of your pump to increase off idle acceleration?

Well i was talkin to a friend and he pointed me into the right direction on where to look for the esn, but i have one major problem, rust, and one minor, location. i can read what i think is the first 4 numbers, and the last one, 9101---8, logging onto quickserve i typed in the number on my 89 engine sittin in the barn and it wont come up, mabey someone can help here, 88080511, now that ones clear as day to see... im gettin confuzzled

I ran those numbers past my cummins guy and he said neither of them come up as a valid cummins esn. Can you locate the one on the block.

I hate to say it, but at least on my engine that i have sittin in the barn, those are the only numbers on it anywhere near the oil cooler, let alone on that side of the block. Where both of these numbers are located, is just below the water inlet on the right front of the block, above where there is the set of three bolt holes like where you could bolt on a motor mount... I cant find any other numbers or even flat machined surfaces where a number would be stamped... I have been known to be blind, if you could get a picture where it should be that might help if im at the wrong place

I must be blind to because I went out and couldn't find it either. I am going to stop by cumins tomorrow and see if I can. Get more information for you.

Thanks, i really do appriciate it, the closest cummins dealer to me is about 20 miles away, and they wont help me if i dont have the esn(peterbilt dealer) and i work till 5 everyday...
