I took my new TT out this weekend. Gross weight was about 16,500, so not very heavy.



I just put on a new turbo last weekend and I was trying out the Smarty Beta 4. 4.



On the way over I went US26 over Mt. Hood with the Beta on level 5 (a bit much I think). Trying to tow in 6th at 55-60 it ran hot 1100-1200 on flats and small hills. Not bad, because you are supposed to be able to run 1,250 all day long, but not much room to spare. The only problem is when I would encounter a small hill I would have to drop to 5th to keep egt's down and to keep the turbo from surging. I also encountered some surge climbing up to Government camp in 5th coming out of a corner and had to drop to 4th to get away from it. I drove up the pass by the egt gauge, keeping it at 1250-1300 all the way up.



On the way home I ran Smarty Moderate TM level 3. This was a bit better. I came home over Santiam pass and kept the truck in 5th most of the way as I was only running at about 60 MPH. That kept the RPM's around 2200 and the egt's around 900-1000. Once I got down to the flats before Salem and on to I-5 I could run in 6th at 65-70 and be around 1,000 deg.





Overall I like the Turbo, but thought it would run a little cooler with a load. I am a little concerned as to what will happen if I hook to a load of hay this summer where I weigh 21,000lbs.



Also leaving Sisters today it is flat road for a while so I shifted into 6th and had NOOOOOO power. I looked down and saw the Check Enging Light on. I pulled over and plugged in the Smarty and had a "Low Boost Error". I cleared it and went on my way and it didn't happen again. What causes this?



So a couple of questions here. Is 1,250 safe all day like they say? And what could I try to get the temps down a little more?



I am thinking that for towing I wish I had 4. 10's.
 
The low boost code is from the turbo. Since it's a little slower to spool than stock, the ecm sees low boost in some circumstances and goes into limp. It thinks there could be a boost leak which could (god forbid) effect emmsions, so limp mode. Apparently this is fairly common.



You could try and intercooler to cool things down some more.



I think 1250* is safe all day long, especially on a 600 engine.
 
Will an exhaust system help temps? I was thinking of removing the cat and muffler and putting in a 51" Donaldson.
 
The exhaust will help a little. A big intercooler and cam shaft will help a lot. Water/Meth injection using washer fluid will also help a lot. The IC/cam combo and the water/meth injection are each good for 200-300 degrees. My turbo is very similar to yours, but I don't tow, so my temps are irrelevant. Besides, I always add fuel until the temps get too hot, then I spend money to bring them down, then I add fuel ... you get the picture.
