B1 ?

Well despite my best efforts I blew a head gasket today. I had just retorqed the head studs and turned the fuel up so I could get the boost up to around 50 lbs. With studs and o-rings it shouldn't have but it did. I had it towed to the shop and will have the head off tomorrow evening and see if I can sort this out.

That is a major bummer, I hope to have my twins on in a week or so, I have an oringed head. Hope my holds. Let us know what you find out !!!

Good Luck

Well, with a freshly decked block and O ringed head, I am hoping my holds. We took 7 thou off the block and a put a 20 over 12V gasket in. I am scheduled to start fabbing next week.

With the 22CM housing I will be very interested in the spool up and the EGT reduction. I don't plan to run all that much boost, especially to start with. I need cool air for towing.

With the thicker headgasket how are you going to position the injectors to spray in the bowl correctly & if you used differant shims under the injector what are you doing to correct the angle of the injector connecting tube inside the head. 24 valves are a pain to use a thicker headgasket in & make the injectors work like their suppose to. If you figured all this out let me know because i would like to run a little thicker headgasket myself. Thanks.

Kurt

No, I have not figured it out. I know with the thicker head gasket I am risking a different spray pattern. I guess thats a risk I am willing to take. With the HO motor I really wanted to reduce the compression. Only time will tell. I do plan to scope the cylinders occasionally to see what is going on.

I had heard that Piers was working on the injector spray problem. I don't know if they ever came up with anything but it's probably worth a shot. I will be working on the same thing here before too much longer so if you find anything out let us know. www.piersdiesel.com

RonA:

What did you torque your head studs to? How much protrusion on the o-rings? I don't think fire rings have that much of an advantage over o-ringing if o-ringing is done right.

I thought something sounded fishy... o-rings and studs you should be good to 80psi :D

sucks you had to do unecessary work, but good that there wasn't any real damage!

Now I'm ok.

So does that mean it is running or what?

Remember Ron practice makes perfect. Don't feel bad it has happened to me with a new head. Chalk it up to a learning experience.

With new studs it is important that you torque following the instructions in the instructions and then loosen and retorque the studs 2 more times to set the stretch in the studs. Beware that at 125# of torque you are getting very high into the plasticity of the best studs. I touqued to 96# and all is well at over 70# of boost on a regular basis.

Bruce

I cant believe you spent $400 on studs and are just torquing them to 96#s!!! Mine are torqued to 165#s, and I know of at least 3 other trucks done the same w/ absolutely no problems. RonA... a spare motor??? Just buy a tow truck.

Truck is supposed to be done today. Well, done in that it will be driveable. I'm gonna turn the fuel down so that it won't go over 40lbs of boost. This getting old is starting to suck. I keep having to load that head into the trunk of my wifes old car and go back and forth to the shop. My back is starting to complain. The head must weigh as much as a small block chevy block. It's really bad when it's in the crate with the cam core. Forget the tow truck I need my youth back.
