New/Used truck

Presently driving a 2017 CTD 2500 4x4. Considering getting a newer truck, but not sure what year to get. I have read that the newer trucks have some good improvements, but also hear of some issues.

Are there any years (2018 - 2022) that are better than others?

Not much of a change from 17 to 18.

19-20 currently have the CP4, but will get those changed to a CP3-3 via a recall.

Other comfort features have come along, so it really depends on what you goal is.

19+ have 3.73's as the SRW gear ratio, which means 9% more rear wheel torque for the same engine output. Combine that with the 50lb/ft bump for SO motors and there is a 15% increase in real wheel torque.

If you get a 3500 HO there will be a substantial amount more torque to the rear wheels. 17 SO to 22 HO would be a 43% increase in rear wheel torque.

I did find a good article in one of my 2019 RV magazines that went into great detail of all the improvements done in 2019. Yes, I am that far behind on my reading.

* So, I know I would want at least want a 2019. Were there any improvements in 20-22 to warrant looking at those years?
* Other than the added HP and torque are there any advantages with the HO motor?
* Is the MPG worse/better/the same with the HO motor?
* Is the AISIN transmission a better transmission?

The fuel pump in the 19-20 isn’t as good as 21+, but they are being recalled and upgraded.

Otherwise it’s mainly feature upgrades. The torque did go up in 21 for the HO.

I think the HO/Aisin are worth it, more power and a better transmission.

Fuel mileage empty should be similar, but towing the HO makes more power so should use more fuel if that power is being used.

Do you want to play bad odds? It's a S L O W Recall as CP4 replacement parts become available. With the supply chain problems getting parts for anything is delayed. You run the risk with a 19-20 CP4 of waiting on lots of parts if the glitter bomb goes off. Further there isn't even a U-Haul available to rent let alone normal loaners and rentals here at this time. Been this way for over 1 year.

Look at new truck prices, if you can find any, NO Discount! and your (and everyone else's) used truck value has gone up vs. it's value in 2019.

Bad time to buy new, worse time to buy used. It's only money, but, money can't even buy you one because they are very scarce. Order one new and hope it doesn't sit around waiting for one part that needs a "chip".

The only up side to switching to a 3500 SW right now is the high value of your present truck. As you know your 2017 cruises on the freeway bobtail really well with the 3.42 gears. Put a Aisin transmission with 3.42's and gets loads moving really well. I loved my 2015 3500 4x4 SB Aisin Laramie.

Sold my mine when DW got ALS and I could not get her from her wheel chair up into the high truck. So now both are gone and I miss her and the RAM.

If I still had the RAM I would have a longer trailer both my Can Am Spyder and Kawasaki KRX 1000 SxS would be headed to Washington right now.

A newer one with adaptive cruise control, 360 cameras, and collision control would be a nice update.

Dad yesterday bought a 14 Laramie 96k AISIN. Good condition paid 52k the guy was asking 58. Drove it home 120 miles lie o meter said 19mpg.
