New or Reconditioned VP-44 Injection Pump Installed ?

Cant hold my Horses, Power is Back ,

New pump installed at Dodge this morning, 1 Hour and 45 mins and she was out and we were road testing her. The Mechanic Paul and the Service Manager actually incouraged Me to asist Paul in the install of the new Pump. I handed him tools and rags to keep things clean, and of course kept the Coffee coming. I can tell you these people are great. My truck has power I've never seen before and the auto trans seems to shift better and hold the gears longer and not fall on its face when shifting into over drive.

The Mechanic said something that has me puzzled, the new Pump is painted Black as mine was raw aluminum, anyway He said that 5 Star reconditions the VP-44 for warrenty repairs. Is this true. I thought the VP-44 was a throw away Pump.

Anyway my truck is running Great thanks to the Dodge Guys who are a True 5 Star Dealership. I'm not sure if I can say who the are or not someone let me know and I'll tell all.

TJ :D :D :D

Was it broken????

What was wrong with it in the first place, inquiring minds want to know. Also was it replace under warranty? I see your truck isn't stock and thought that would be something the dealer would try to get out of.

Just curious,

Big White Beast

The Pump was leaking fuel near the wire plug on the back side and top of pump. Pump would lose fuel preasure and not allow the engine to start unless I bled and re-primed the system every morning, for the last 2 weeks.

The pump was replaced under warrenty.

Still looking for answer to the question can 5 Star rebuild the VP-44. Also I was told to go to this 5 Star Dealer By a Mechanic at Cummins, and that Bosch was aware of the leaking pump problems on some 98. 5 and 99 trucks.

Thanks, TJ

As far as I know, no Dodge dealers do in-house pump rebuilds. Even Cummins rarely does an in-jouse rebuild. As for the ability to rebuild a VP44, I have not heard of it being done, but I am sure it will be happening soon (if it hasn't already). All of the VP44's I have installed have been new.

Thanks Evan,

As I said the pump was painted black and looked brand new but 5 Star Mechanic said Chrysler Reconditions them and he had to send the core back. My old pump was raw Aluminun in color.

Truck sure runs Great though.

Yep, just 1hr & 45 mins He removed the cruise control box, air intake horn & Injector lines , then he unscrewed the breather thing in front of pump on fronr engine cover them the pump mounting bolts and then the nut on the shaft and pump was on the bench in 30 mins.

He then reinstalled in reverse order we bled system and She fired rigth up. I was impreased. It took me a six pack and 1/2 a day to change lift pump the first time. Now I can do one in about 30 mins

TJ.

All the injection pumps that come from Dodge Dealers are now rebuilds, they have enough in the system to do so.

At first, like anything new they have to start out replacements with new ones then start rebuilding.

Ted, do you know who is rebuilding the VP44 injection pumps..... Dodge? (doubtful)... Cummins? (again, doubtful)... or is it Bosch?

..... just wondering

Just the other day I was looking at 24v cummins in our new rescue trucks and noticed that the injection pump was black.

It might just be a color thing :D

Re: New or Reconditioned VP-44 Injection Pump Installed ?

Just curious, how many miles on your truck when the pumped failed?

Steve,

I had 78,880 miles when it went, I was pulling a horse trailer w/5 horses at 70 MPH about 60 miles from home I started smelling Diesel Fuel in the cab, and thought it had a leak at the slip fitting at the fuel lift pump,(Not) I was pumping a steady drip out of the top of the injector pump housing near the electric plug connection, only problem I experenced was the smell and leak truck ran fine untill I shut her down and the system would lose its prime over night. So for a week as I awaited the new pump I had to re-prime every morning to use my truck.

Yesterday I went down to Cummins and verified that all the VP44s are now remans fron Bosch or Independent contractor Cummins gets $1100. 00 and change for the reman and the one Curtis showed me was Black also.

Chrysler Warrenty charge was

$155. 10 Labor

$925. 10 Injector Pump

And NO CHARGE to Me

That's interesting....

I know DC wouldn't charge me $925 for an injection pump! Try $2-3k. Hopefully I'll never have to, but if mine goes out, I'm going to Piers. :D

Thanks for the info.

I haven't heard of to many of these pumps failing. But it seems that if the supply of remans are going up maybe theres something going on we need to know about. Wonder how many TDR members have had pump failures and for what reason?

Have just about 50k on my truck now, knock on wood no engine related problems. :)
