My VP44 decided to take a dump exactly when the odometer rolled over 110 000miles. It had set the 0216 code three times without any other signs of bad FP. Then on my way to work I got the dreaded dead pedal, again it set a 0216 code but no CEL. I drove the car home from work, it then ran as usual with no codes. I ordered a new VP44 right away, I drove the truck very little while waiting for my new FP, no new codes then.

I put in a new VP44, but I noticed right away it runs rough. While cruising at 50-60mph it surges or I might say it's missing (just like a gasser with bad breakerpoints) It's worst at light load on the engine (around 2-5pounds boost) I can also feel it at lower speeds, but I think the converter takes away most of the jerks. At full throttle it runs normal, no missing at all. The idle is not as smooth as my old VP either. It sets no other codes than 602 that should come from my Smarty, my old FP had it also. Without the Smarty, no codes at all.

Any ideas good people?

I talked to my supplier, a well known vendor here at the forum, and I'm quit sure he will take good care of me, and he's ready to ship a new VP44 to me, but first I'd like to see if there's something I have missed. This was my first install and everything went smooth. I had cleand the engine real good before I started the job, and I'm quit sure the key went in exactly as it was supposed to do. I lined up the axel on the new FP with the old one, and the key where mounted correctly with the arrow pointing in the direction of the pump.

Anyone experienced something like this before?

did the key you installed come with the new pump? just a thought, the keys are matched to the specific pump for timing. good luck.

Yes, it came with it's own key. If the key are wrong it would most likely set a code wouldn't it? My vendor told me that he had installed a pump where the key had been slightly shaved off on the timing gear during instalation. That truck ran bad and set a code, they put in a new key with the same number and it ran great.

What would the result be if a 245hp pump was installed in a 235hp engine? I'm just thinking out loud if maybe it could be misslabeled.

Since I bought the truck last March I have had a steady 13-15 pounds FP. When I got it I put a FP gauge and it had 3-4 ponds at idle and sucked it down to 0 in a hurry. A new liftpump fixed that. How long it have been like that are anybodys guess I think, but the 216 code started to show a month or two back.

Installed a new VP44 today, problem solved. My vendor shipped out a warranty-replacement for me really fast, now we are all waiting to see what was wrong with the old one.

Keep us updated because my truck has the same symptoms as yours only it started probably a month or two after I installed my new VP-44 and RASP.
