I currently have commercial plates on my truck, and I want to switch to passenger plates. The only problem is the truck weighs over the 5500 pound weight limit. When I am on the parkways I always see 2500/ 3500 pickups even duallys with passenger plates. Just want to know if any of u guys out there are running passenger plates and if so how ya went about doin it. Thanks in advance. Mike

There is no consistency in dmv. Sometimes they don't look at the title to see the weight. I have 3 trucks all diesel 3/4 tons. Two with commercial tags and one with passenger tags. NY dmv is hell on earth.

Amen to that. I was just looking at my registration and noticed that when the dealer registered my truck they put down the unladen weight of my truck as 9000 lbs. , and for fuel type they put G for gasser I can see this is gonna be a headache already. Mike

The same thing happened to me. I lived in NY all my life up until a year ago. I bought my truck at Thomas Dodge in Pt Jeff. I had to go to the DMV and file for a new title. Had the weight changed and the gas to diesel. Dealer was of no help and insisted they registered it properly... yea right. Anyway, it wasn't too much of a hassle and had it taken care of pretty fast. The bit about the passenger plates isn't a big deal either because you tell them, the dmv, the weight. Even if they use the bill of lading just register it with passenger plates. They usually don't hassle you. Downside is if a Trooper on the parkways sees the truck and knows the diference between a 1500 and a 2500/3500 your screwed. Most of the people I know debadged their trucks to get around it.

go to the NYS DMV website. Get the straight facts there. I'm in the same boat with an 05 3500 srw qc. You NEED a cap period. read the page on how to get passanger plates for a commercial truck. I'm waiting for CAN-Back to finish production of their caps for my truck. Go to the DMV website get it straight. the fines are $125 with out a cap and another 125 without permanent business lettering

As panzerkw said -- go directly to the NYS DMV website. Also, request the rules and regulations for the parkways. Caution, a cap alone does not do it! There are other modifications required... and, depending on the Trooper, you may be asked to verify them. My '99 4X4 QC Dually had a cap only, and was registered as a passenger vehicle. The troopers were kind enough to point out that:

1- Passenger plates or not, no vehicles can be over 20' long on the parkways.

2- DRW vehicles are not allowed -period!

3- Caps must be a minimum height (45"+?) above the bed

4- There must be permanently installed seats with seatbelts

OR

The vehicle must be converted to a camping vehicle with a stove and bed.

After being stopped 3X with no tickets, and 3 more with tickets, each one escalating in cost, I gave up driving on the NYS parkways.

FJfonda, what did the troopers cite you for, if I may ask?

I'm planning on getting a DRW LWB pickup, and as far as i've seen in the NYSDMV regs as long as a pickup over 5000lbs unladen wt. has a "permanently attached cap" and has "seat mounting brackets" or is made a permanent "camper" which includes a stove, it can get passenger plates, and therefore can travel on parkways unrestricted.

I've never seen the 20' or DRW limitations in writing anywhere.

i'll see if a friend of mine at the NYSDOT can shed some light on the real rules of the road regarding pickups on the parkways.

If you are driving your DRW long bed QC truck in NY during vacation from another state, do they hassle you on the parkways? I have thought about driving our truck on our annual trip to Connecticut to see our friends. Based on what I have read, I might just drive the car like in the past.

abrankod,

The length and DRW statements are in a document that defines the parkway rules and regulations. One Trooper pulled it from his cruiser to show me --- I have hear it can be requested from Albany but I never got around to getting one. The 1st citation was for driving with my aux light on (roadside compromise) and the other 2 were for driving on the pkw with the improper class of vehicle.

mwhals,

If I was out of state, drive on it unless your plate has the word commercial... drive close to the speed limit and you should be able to talk out of a ticket if you are willing to get off the next exit. (IMHO)
