new to forum-great site and info , thankyou. I have a question for you new 4. 5 owners. I hear of no smoke from the new 600, tonight on the way home i noticed smoke on acc. in head lights behind me. Being a ex stroker i am used to smoke but i keep hearing talk of no smoke,is it normal? 3300 miles , average about 15mpg

The only time I see smoke is when i'm stuck in traffic or running low rpm around town and put the peddle to the floor. I also only see it at night in other cars headlights. Never durring the day.

thanks i was just curious its my first ctd and so far i love it except for the mileage. i have a 92 7. 3 with 230,000 miles on it that gets 16mpg so i hope this part gets better

I've found that soot tends to build up inside the exhaust plumbing during light-throttle driving. Then, when you get on it a bit and get more air flowing, that soot tends to blow out the back. If you "blow it out" a couple times then you'll notice the effect is much diminished (until the soot builds up again). :)

i've yet to see smoke come out of mine :(:(:( but my pipes are all sooty like any diesels exhaust pipes are so there is some there, but i just can't see it. .

The old "single-event" injectors didn't burn as efficiently. Thus, with more fuel (mod's, or hammer-down), much of it did not burn-off cleanly. With the pilot injection on the '03-'04's smoke is almost nil. The '04. 5's have a tripple injection, for even more refinement (cleaner/quieter, yet). A slight "vapor" of smoke is about all you'll see, unless you get really aggressive with a box/injectors.

i barely ever saw smoke without my edge ez, but now with the ez if i sit there and rev the engine i see a little smoke come out. Id say for an 04. 5 600 to smoke youd need an ez + mild injectors. To see big smoke stack a ez and tst together. . there was a video not too long ago with a guy driving... It was a 03 or 04 though not 04. 5.

Yes, soot does build up in the pipe and that's a good thing. I try to save up as much as possible and release it all at once when a driver does something stupid. When in doubt, smoke 'em out :)
