Hi Gang,
Have been following the board since Fall when I bought a truck in Texas. Too nice to subject it to the salt of Michigan so stored it for the winter and drove my beater Fxxd. Now need to do some work before starting the season.
I found some transmission flluid on the bottom of the bed just above the front u-joint to the rear axle. Seems to be coming out of the rear shaft seal of the transfer case. Any one seen this before and is it a "shade tree mechanic" fix? Also what to buy some gauges and baseline tome values. Does a pillar mount exist for the first gen trucks? Also recommendation on type of gauges.

Hi Ski,

As for the seal leaking I am not sure what to tell you. But I just ordered a set of Autometer guages (boost and pyrometer) and an A-pillar guage pod from Big Don. I haven't heard any complaints about Autometer and they are very reasonably priced. I will let you know how I like them once I get them installed. I can even send you a picture or two if you are interested. What are some of the specifics on your truck?

To replace the rear oil seal on the transfer case.
1 remove drive shaft from the yoke.
2 remove the nut from the center of the yoke.
3 remove the meatal washer from the center of the yoke
4 remove the rubber sealing washer from the center of the yoke
5 remove the yoke
6 remove the bolts holding the output shaft oil seal retainer to the transfer case (5)
7 remove the oil seal from the retainer and
install the new oil seal
Here are the part numbers for the items involed.
yoke nut pn 2954140
yoke steel washer pn 578994
yoke sealing washer pn 4210973 *
output shaft oil seal pn 2954128 *
oil seal retainer gasket pn 2225039 *
*= parts that need to be replaced.
oil seal retainer bolts are tighten to 40 ft. lbs. yoke nut is tighten to 130 ft. lbs.
The drive shaft strap clamps are tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (for diesel engines)
All this is from the factory service manual.

Before you proclaim the seal bad, make sure that a critter has not made its home in the vent line. Been there done that.
