Hello TDR guys,

I have a 03 HO cummins 6sp 4x4. I have 20k miles on it... ... I'm not into lots of mods but i am wanting a bit more performance. I did install a banks monster exhaust on truck and i like what that did for the sound and the responsiveness. I'm not really fimilar with all the chips and other high dollar mods but i have been looking into a air intake system. I'd like to gain a bit more performance over the stock air box setup , make a better turbo sound/whine, and not spend alot of money. My questions are, for example the afe intake system, will it give me a noticeable increase in performance over what i have now? what about the turbo sound, will i get any? It seems with the filter out in the open like it is, that it would become dirtier easier than the stock design, is there more frequent maintenance involved with something like this? any info related to this would be greatly appreciated... . thanks

I didn't notice much performance improvement. In fact, I didn't notice any with the AFE Megacannon. As far as turbo whine, It's a lot more noticeable. and I like it. Recharging the filter (washing & re-oiling) is easy... just like the K&N I have on my gasser. The cleaning frequency depends on your driving conditions. I've only had mine for 5k and haven't done anything to it. The oil breaks down if the filter is exposed to sunlight. I'm not sure if that means direct or indirect sunlight, so I'll re-oil lightly soon. The AFE literature does warn not to clean too often, I guess it filters more efficiently when its a little dirty. I've heard the main benefit is it helps keep the EGTs lower.

I noiticed a big difference in throttle response with an after market filter setup. Even a drop in like the AFE will make a nice difference. On the dyno they make about 10 more H. P.

An air box is important to reduce your EGT's when BOMB'ing and/or towing heavy. A quick/cheap way to simply get more noise from the turbo is to remove the silencer ring. (A search should give plenty of instructions/pictures). But it (silencer ring) will do very little as far as performance is concerned, just more noise.

I would recommend holding out a few more months before purchasing a box. The ones on the market now are raising fuel pressure to get more in, during the event. This is effective, but could be detremental to the fuel pumps (jury's still out). The "softest" way to increase power will be by modifying the injection timing & duration. There are quite a few good vendors working on these boxes right now. They're close. Then things will get fun around here!
