Newbie needs help--going to buy a CTD

Hello all, this is my first post on TDR. I'm going to look at a used 2001 3500 6 sp. How can I tell if this is the HO version? Any tips for evaluating the condition of the truck, in particular, the transmission? Trouble areas to look for with this model?



I know this is asking a lot, but any info is appreciated!

Your post doesn't show your state. If it is a six speed, it is HO (I think). Whats the milage? Might be worth paying a shop to evaluate.



More than likely a safe bet. Whats the price?

Welcome to the TDR! There's SOOO much great info here...



In 2001, the 6 speed was only available with the HO - even according to the Dodge Product Guide I have here. I think there were a few trucks in 1999 that were standard output engines with the 6-speed.



The NV5600 6-speed is substantially larger than the NV4500 5-speed. The clutch may not withstand as much as far as engine upgrades (more power!), but overall it is a stout transmission. There have been some synchronizer issues, especially when cold, that were covered under a TSB. Might not be covered at 100k though. If it had an issue it may have been done already.



One advantage of the 2001 may be rear disc brakes if it was a later build - I know mine were vastly improved over my '99 and '00 drums. Anything can be fixed on them of course - lift pump, clutch, etc. Hope it works out for you...

I decoded the VIN, and it appears as if I have a standard output (rather than HO) 6 speed 2001. Aaahh!

That would be the ETC (standard) not the ETH (HO).



ETC 6-speeds were sold in 1999 and 2000, but I've not heard of any in 01. Doublecheck.



Look on the side of the timing cover at the engine ID tag. It will list your HP/rpm right there. 235 is ETC and 245 is ETH. The tag will be greasy and hard to see. Use a rag and a flashlight.



Good news/bad news. The ETC BOMBs really well. Look at mine. Bad news is that the ETC has the smaller clutch disc and is a more expensive upgrade to get to the 13".

Well, everyone, brought home the 2001 3500. I'm very pleased. No issues on the 300 mile drive home from the dealership. I'm especially glad that I took everyone's advice and got a manual transmission. It is a "southern" truck and so there is very little salt damage.

Yes, Wade, turned out to be a HO. Just got done washing her. Man, that's a lot of truck to wash!
