ok i have 2 questions. how do u time theise beasts? r they just like a gasser or is it totally different? second question what is the best way or best product to use to clean the motor. like i said i am still new to the diesle scean. and being 19 dont help either.

It's not like timing a gasser. You have to time the injection pump with precision tools, it's usually a job best left to a diesel mechanic. I've done a lot of back yard & garage mechanical work on all my vehicles over the years, but I've never attempted timing on a Dodge/Cummins. I did replace/time pumps on a 6. 2 Chevy & an Oliver tractor, but they were rotary pumps. To clean the engine, I just drive a few blocks to a car wash, & with a cool-luke warm engine, just hose it off.

A professional is the way to go with the timing. the expense of the specialty tools is enough to detour you! Simple Green with warm water works for me. Also, it's E before L in DIESEL:D

The Cummins dealers can usually do a "spill port timing" and set the timing a little more exact than the "dial caliper" method used by most Dodge dealers. I've watched the dial caliper method many times but would not want to attempt it myself. The spill port timing uses fuel running through the pump while they are actually setting the timing and requires specialized equipment.

As far as cleaning, I agree that the car wash is hard to beat.

i herd the simple green will eat the aluminum. well i guess i am not timing this thing then. what else could i do to my truck befor i really have to start to worry about the trans?

TStetson,

Do you have the service records for your truck? The 12V needs to have the valves adjusted. About every 24k per Cummins I believe. Read up on doing this in the archieves. If you don't want to take it on, have someone do the valves in conjunction with the timing.
