Okay,

I am a new(er) Cummins owner and a new TDR member. I bought a '01 2500 4x4 Quad Cab. I do tow some, about 6k for recreational purposes. I know this question has been asked by all new members/owners, so please bear with me. I was wondering what the general consensus was on mods for my truck. I have been reading about bombing, and boost gauges and all that. Thanks in advance for your input, and I look forward to all the great information on TDR!

You didn't state wether or not it's a manual or automatic, but if you plan on "bombing"... .

I'd install:

1- boost, egt, and fuel pressure guage

2- exhaust brake (if you so desire, I wouldn't be without one personally)

3 - power edge ez

4a - if it's a 6spd with 3. 54:1's. . stop here until you get a clutch

4b - if it's a 6spd with 4. 10:1's, you could probably add 275 injectors (maybe, not sure on that one, I have 3. 54:1's

I'll let the 5spd and auto guys comment further

fix your sig

First we need to know about the truck is it an auto or manual. Also how far do you want to go with the power. At any rate put in a boost and pyro gauge, and fuel pressure at minimum. if auto, get trans temp gauge. Edge EZ nice for kick in the pants feeling(these trucks should come that way) If you want gobs of power, either upgrade your clutch or your trans, put in some injectors and an edge comp box, and turbo, and fuel lines and lift pump and exhaust, and propane, and oh man it never stops. Get out while you still can. Im an addict:eek:

Ooops...

Oh, sorry about that, I forgot. My truck is an auto, and I do not have the 4. 10 gears. How far do I plan to do with it? Not that far (yet)... . I was just looking for some good power upgrades, I don't think I will be racing it anytime soon. I still need to do a lot more reading on what everything does, and what it will all impact. I am sure that once I get into it I will be hooked. I come from the wheeling hobby of jeeps, that is what I haul recreationally. I have a 99 TJ (Wranger) lifted locked and loaded. So I am familiar with addictive hobbies!

Welcome Aboard!

If it's an auto that you have:

Gauges as dmurdock and rubberneck described. A PE EZ or VA would be a good choice.

Now stop:{ Do not pass GO:{

Any other power enhancements would require transmission mods. That includes an exhaust brake. IMHO, you could go with a 4" exhaust but, I really do not see the benefit unless you plan on further Bombing.

ditto bigdaddy

yes i agree, unless you upgrade the transmission DO NOT go any further than an EZ or VA. I have seen a truck melt 2 trannys in 2 months with only an EZ and 275 rv injectors. ( he refused to listen when upgrading was suggested) As stated E-brake bad idea also if trans not upgraded. later

Just my $. 02 worth but I don't think an exhaust brake is all that critical while towing 6K. I'd put the gauges in first (Fuel Pressure; EGT; transmission; Boost), then go with an EZ, VA, or like box... ;)

Okay, so guages it is...

I am trying to get an idea of the different guages out there. What manufacturers are better, and where are the better places to buy parts from? I am used to shopping online, for my jeep stuff, do I just go out to Napa or wherever? Are there good suppliers online?

There are a lot of good gauges out there, including Auto Meter, Westach, SPA, and more. Take a look at your Geno's catalog that came with your TDR magazine. There is a lot of good info there. If you don't have the catalog, here is their gauges page: http://216.167.98.200/CoastalData/s...733160&st3=-67975957&CATID=1&ObjectGroup_ID=4 Ask ten people which gauges they like and you'll get 10 answers. I like Westach because they are good quality, are resonably priced, have dual gauges available, and are easy to install... . ;)

Call Nowell (HVAC) at performance diesel, get the spa's you will not be sorry. Go to the liks section on this site for performance diesel contact info

Hey Rubberneck - Nowel does not sell SPA's anymore and that is all I will say. He does sell other good Bombing equipment thought.

913 - It sounds like you are going to become a bomb addict. I would suggest the same as everyone else. Get guages (Boost/EGT/Fuel Press and maybe transmission temp). Then get either 275 injectors or a timing box (EZ or VA or ??). If you know you are going to want more it might be wise to go for the box first that way you don't have to buy injectors twice. If I were doing it all over again with what is available now I would buy a Edge Comp box and not tap the pump wire for a while. It would function just like an EZ untill you are ready for more and you would not have to buy a second box later.

After the box I would get my transmission taken care of by DTT and then add some injectors (DD2's are susposed to be nice, I have 3's but don't tow). At the same time I would add a different air filter (BHAF or KN RE0880 or similar) and either straight pipe the exhaust or go with a 4 inch system I would also move the lift pump to the rear of the truck and get rid of all the banjo bolts. Now you can hook up the pump wire on the Comp if that is what you chose to buy. By this time you will be ready for a new (bigger) turbo, the flavor of the month seems to be the B1 Bomber or a PDR HX40. Some turbos require a new exhaust down pipe so if you are going to add a bigger turbo this is the time to make the exhaust switch. After that if you still do not have enought you can do lots more stuff which seems to get more and more expensive. Maybe bigger injectors (DD supermentals or step 5's from Bully). Then maybe a new cam shaft from DD and get your pump reworkded by DD. At this point you will have over 500 HP and will probably be broke. Happy Bombing and let us know if you need help spending your $$

Just thought I better add that all of this will void some/part or all of your warranty... Repeat after me, I am my own warranty station. :D

JR2 got ya, i know some people have been frustrated with their delivery times. Me included, however if you find a dealer for the spa, they are very nice gauges, and i love mine.

rubberneck - oh I am with you, I love my SPA's and would buy them again. They are not without there problems (I am trying to get a new press sensor right now) but they are worth it for the nice features they offer.
