I purchased a 98 12 valve 2wd 5 speed with 107k miles today and I am considering replacing my 03 HO 6 speed with it and save a $425 truck payment. I'm wondering what I should do to "help" it out a little. I have a set of guages off my powerjoke I am planning on putting on there, but what other mods would you consider?? I am pulling a 20' enclosed trailer 85% of the time in town and I'm worried about too much smoke being blown all over my trailer?? What would be some good improvements to get into the 375-400 hp range with "manageable" smoke?? And how much HP is the stock clutch good till??

Jmho....

If smoke (or lack of) is important a #11 will give you a nice (safe) HP boost. That coupled with the Med AFC spring properly adjusted will give you a very smoke free, great towing setup. Your stock turbo will do fine with this setup and you will probably get by with the stock clutch. With your 215hp pump, the gov springs are not as important. You will be in the low - mid 300s with this.

A #10 plate give you much more HP (be in the 350 - 400hp) and can be made pretty smoke free but you will have to do something with the turbo and a clutch to hold the power. Smoke control will be a challege towing in town with this plate. I have this setup and just a turbo housing and I have lots of low RPM smoke. I can tow smoke free on the highway but not intown.

Try to get the plate from a dealer that allows you to trade the plate in for a more agressive one. You might find 325 - 350 hp is plent of HP for towning and much easier to control smoke as well as easy on the check book.

I towed for several years with a #11 and it did a great job.

If towing, you will definitely want a governor spring kit. 3,000 will work fine, but you can always go 4,000. Go with a #10 plate, very good all the way around. If you want to control EGTs, you might want to go to a 16 cm housing for the turbo. Also, get a good air filter, something like an aFe filter. Open the exhaust up. 4in. isn't really needed, but sounds nice. Make sure there is no cat on it, and you could just straight pipe it. Stock clutch will hold this for awhile, but you may need to upgrade after a while. Maybe go to a Southbend Clutch when you have time and money.
