How to PROPERLY break in a diesel engine. Part 1.

Newbie Here

My girlfriend's dad found me a 97 CTD. I am pretty stoked about it. As soon as my loan gets approved I am sending them the money and they are going to pick it up. The prior owners said that they would hold it for me, so this is the real deal  . I won't get to drive it until December as that is when my tour in Japan is finished. I would have loved to drive it before I bought it, but hey, i needed a vehicle for when I come home and I trust my girlfriend's dad (diesel mechanic) as well.

Any feedback about the 1997 year would be truely appreciated. Like I staid in the subject line I'm a newbie but have taken a keen interest in CTDs. Looking forward to making some new friends and learning a lot!

Just got word that my orders will be New Orleans in December, as soon as I get the truck I will be making the roughly 1,400 mi trip down there from Denver. Easily the longest trip I will have ever made alone. Anybody got any good road tips??

Get an iPod or satellite radio. Its a long trip to listen to the same 6 CDs over and over.

Sleep when you need to. Eat when you want. Don't let the tank fall below 1/4 (just in case you are not near a station). Drink lots of water.

Call you mother (sorry, nothing to do with anything, but as long as I was giving out advice).

As long as we are handing out advice,

1. Change all the filters.

2. carry a spare fuel filter, 9/16 wrench, and I belive 10mm

3. Check all fluids.

Did that on my honeymoon to Yellowstone from MI along with carrying about 100gal of fuel and never had a problem. I am a firm beliver in murphys law, if you are ready to fix/handle it, it will never happen.

Thank you for defending us and keep up the fine work

When I drove OTR I went this way: from Limon 287 S to Dallas area, take I20 E to Shrevereport, I49S to I10 then E to New Orleans.

That I10 will test your springs!!!!

Good for you being in the Military. More young men should do the same!!

Looks like a real nice pickup. You will love it.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and advice. My truck is already home in Colorado and I fly in 18 days! Oo. Oo. Oo.

2 year tour overseas is just too long. Can't wait to be in the United States again with a vehicle and reading good ol' American writing on signs and restaurants :-laf .

1. Thank you for your service to America.

2. Ditto on the filter changes preflight

3. Best of luck with the truck

4. Her Dad's a diesel mechanic? - Dude, MARRY THAT GIRL!!! ;)

Make sure that Killer Dowel Pin (KDP) is fixed before ya go drivin' a thousand miles in your new old truck. Ask the prev. owner if its already done. If not, talk yer girlfriend's dad into installing the TST fix kit before you get home!
