Good evening to everybody. . I'm new to TDR and so far I'm impressed with all the great info. . my question ... what is a turbo silencer ring and how do I remove it and why remove it at all... not only new to TDR but also new to diesels... Thanks

Welcome to thee place to get info on your CTD.

You will soon find that there are many that know and some that just do things cause the other guy did it. I feel for the "get rid of the clogged converter", I wrestled that thing off to find , at 150K miles, there was no sign of clogging... oh well. There are clogging stories at 25K miles... hummm.

On the silencer ring, it is there to minimize the turbo inlet noise. Located on the compressor side and held in place by a spring ring when removed (mines not), your truck will whine more, some like noise some do not. As for performance some will say it spools up faster and goes faster... ... ... they probably went faster with playing cards in their bicycle spokes!

This is my opinion and you are intitled to it! I anticipate flames on this one... . so what!

Again welcome aboard and enjoy your truck!

Welcome you have come to the right place

I have mine out it sounds good if you like the noise it can get old on long trips but it keeps you awake just pop it out with a screwdriver and go about your way

I removed mine out of curiousity. It was actually a very simple 3 step process for me.

Remove black hose on inlet to turbo and use a screw driver to carefully remove the snap ring in the housing and release the silencer ring. Re-install the black hose to turbo

Go for a test drive listen to the turbo sing or whistle or whine or make excessive noise (your opinion on that one).

Remove black hose on inlet to turbo, re-install the silencer ring and work the snap ring back into position. Re-install the black hose to turbo.

Smile that it cost you nothing!

diesel on

The increase in noise is the incoming air hitting the ends of the turbine blades. I'm not sure there is any benefit to its removal. My mileage seemed a touch better when I put it back in. Sure sounds cool without it, though. :D

silencer ring

Mines out and I love it. I not only drive a diesel for the fuel savings dependability longevity pulling power... . but also because I love the SOUND. If for a brief moment I don't want to listen to it I can tune up the radio. If I just want it to be relativly quiet I close the windows. I never heard of someone owning a muscle car and saying they want it to be quiet... or a Harley . . to me owning a diesel is a simular train of thought.

Steve:D :D :D

Thanks guys. . took it out and love the little extra noise. . not quite as noisey as my dads GTX with a gear drive... now thats noise. . sounds just like a supercharger... . thanks agian for the info. .
