Heard from my dealer that for 2002, the Cummins will be turned up to 305 ponies to compete with the DMax. Interesting.

I wonder if the 2002 date is going to be a 2003 year model. Nice article Joe. He's pretty confident that his source is accurate. Time will tell. To have a Cummins with that power and be quiet... ... .

I'm also waiting to see what the 2003 has to offer before I finally buy my truck. Once the specs are out for the 2003, I'll decide at that time wether I'll buy the 2003 or get an end of year 2002 model.

No truck at present. Waiting to see what the 2003 model year has to offer in the Ram 2500.

Heres the latest tidbit I heard from a local mechanical company (Finning-Caterpillar. Now I cannot confirm this but "sanitised" paperwork is to be supplied.

They are getting specs for their new fleet of trucks. The latest from DC is that there is going to be two engines in the RAMs. If you have the 2500 - 3500 series you can get the Cummins with the 300 Hp rating. They are planning to introduce 4500 and 5500 trucks that will have the axle/GCVW ratings to compete with the Frods. These trucks will have the MB 6. 4L diesel with undisclosed Hp/Ft-Lbs numbers. Its hard to believe but would make sense to capture the industrial market.

Again I can't prove any of this so far.

Well Lil Dog, sounds like your source and the dealers source are at least consistent with the 300 hp. Wonder what kind of drivetrain they'll put behind this thing and what they'll do to stop tinkering with it. All they need is an HO with the EZ to get to 300 now. That means all they'll do is change the software.

I read this a while back, in April on car-truck.com:
Cummins just received US Patent #6,216,658 for an "Engine cylinder block with optimized stiffness. " I have yet to track down much information on the next-generation Cummins ISB turbo diesel intended for the next generation Ram. The new diesel is scheduled to debut in model year 2003 when the 3/4 and 1 ton Rams make their debut. The only fact to emerge so far came from one of my Ace Buzz Patrollers whose driven a Ram equipped with the new engine. He reported that it is the quietest truck diesel he has ever heard. He added that even in a garage it sounded like a gasoline engine.

Cummins latest cylinder block patent may explain how this is being achieved. The block has several features built in that enhance structural stiffness, thereby reducing noise emissions. The block includes an upper portion with cylinder bores and a lower portion forming at least a part of a crankcase. At the upper and lower portions of the block, the casing has sculpted wall portions with a curved, undulate shape.

At a side of the cylinder block, a closed oil cooler cavity is formed. A wall is provided to generally separate the oil cooler cavity from the water jacket defined within the block. An opening is provided in the wall, but the opening is distally located relative to a water pump outlet that provides a flow of coolant into the cavity, thereby improving the flow direction of coolant across the oil cooler. Also, an opposite side of the cylinder block includes a closed tappet cavity to accommodate push rods. The closed tappet cavity is defined by a sculpted tappet cavity wall that is integrally formed with the upper and lower portions of the block, improving block rigidity.

The above-described features have been found to enhance the stiffness of the block, resulting in substantially reduced noise levels. In particular, the noise level emitted from the cylinder block is substantially lower than the noise level emitted from a cylinder block having conventional structural features. Good news for all of you who are tired of scaring your neighbors when you fire up your diesel equipped Ram.

I have 2 good friend in both Cummins and Dodge and both of them have told me the same thing that the new ISB will definatly be of the 300 rating and that both of them have driven them with a whole lot of smiles.

Any chance Dodge will upgrade the ETH ratings for model year 2002, or are they willing to concede sales to the higher-rated competition for another year? We have our 1996 sold and must order a model year 2002 in July - I sure would like to see the specs for the 2002 ETH!

The way I hear it from my dealer, is they will be offering the Mercedes and Cummins both in '03. They will also be ALOT quieter. Thats the reason the new body style won't be available until '03 for the 25/35/45/5500's to have the option of which engine.

Engines

To all who answered this thread,do anyone of you, know what transmission's will be available for either the 300hpCummin's,or the Mercedes-Benz!:p

From what i've read over on the mopar rumor site, car-truck.com,

the manual will most likely be a reworked version of the NV5600(which I happen to be very fond of, mine shifts nicely:p) and there are all sorts of rumors about the automatic: 1st rumor was that DC would use the Allison T1000, but since the lawsuit against GM over grille trademarks started, that rumor has died out. 2nd rumor is that Mercedes-Benz will be the supplier of the W5A800 5 speed auto, which is rated at 590 lb-ft. 3rd rumor is that Cummins will supply an auto as a package with the ISB. (i didn't know Cummins made trannys?????) The final rumor is that Dodge is in development of a new HD auto transmission, either a 58RE or a 48RE, i'm not sure.
