Back in October, TDR Writer Greg Whale and I attended a press gathering in Columbus, Indiana to announce the availability of Cummins new 5.0-liter diesel. Whale’s report about the engine is found in Turbo Diesel Register Issue 83 (February/March/April – 2014), pages 58 – 60.

As part of that event, we had the opportunity to tour the plant that will make the 5.0 engine for the known customer, Nissan. And, while there are plans for several commercial versions of the 5.0, it was hard to imagine why such a large amount of manufacturing space was being developed for what seemed to be such a limited opportunity.

As we have pointed out, Nissan sold only about 20,000 of the Titan pickups last year.

Limited opportunity? Maybe yes. Maybe no. Here is a link to, as Paul Harvey would have said, “The Rest of the Story.” The link takes you to an article by Phillip Thomas published on The Truth About Cars website. Click here to read the full article.

Enjoy, and let further speculation begin.

If he plugs the truck in overnight does it start right up? If it does he may have an issue with his grid heaters, depending on how cold it is where you are.
Another possibility is a small fuel leak in the system. Truck sits for a while, fuel siphons back to tank, goes to start truck and truck will start and run off the fuel between the VP and injectors but once the air pocket hits the VP the truck will stall. Gonna have to do a careful visual inspection of all hoses, fittings, filter canister, between injection pump and fuel tank for any wet/dirty fuel lines. It can be a very minor leak and may not be obvious.
