Any Georgia members near Carrolton???

Happy Birthday rkressg

I have a Remington 700 Varmint Special chambered in 7mm-08. Would changing over to a 308 be as simple as changing the barrel or is there more involved.

Thanks,

Brian

You could have a new barrel fitted and chambered, don't swap barrels off another rifle without checking head space. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Lots of good gunsmiths in Pa.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll have to find a smith and see what I can do. I had my heart set on a . 308 to begin with but settled for this one. I guess I can't complain, it will put a 3 shot group in a quarter at 100 yds. (handloads)

Thanks again,

Brian

Since it shoots so well, why change?

It will probably cost you just as much to rebarrel it than to buy another gun. If you just have to have a 308, look around for another Remington 700 or check out Savage - they shoot just as well as the Remington and lots of aftermarket goodies as well.

I'm not against the 308, in fact I was shooting mine this weekend at 1000 yards (lasered with a Leica 1200). Oo.

I totally agree with this. Remington discontinued the standard 700VS for 2005. Dealers are clearing them out everywhere. That's how I got mine. $599. I thought it was a good deal since I see the stocks themselves on eBay going for over $200. They had them in . 308 and . 223. I believe they also discontinued the PSS models... Check around. I think I've seen them in Shotgun News.

The Savage are also very good guns. My . 204 will be a Savage, unless I score another good deal on a Remington. :)

I can not imagine why you would want to take a wildcat caliber like the 7mm-08 and change it back to a conventional . 308. The 7mm-08 is one of the flatest shooting all around weapons made today. It will out shoot a standard . 308 hands down and with handloads its amazing how accurate it really is. They had been shooting them at Williamsport(Original 1000 yd Benchrest Club) for years and until some other radical wildcats had wildcats come out, they were very popular.

Instead of rebarreling it why not sell it and buy/build what you want?. If I was going to build one now it would be a 6. 5/. 284 as they are devistating and very accurate. I am sure someone out there could find a home for that varmint piece. Hmmm, let me see here,I still have 20 more slots in my safe,LOL... ... ... . Andy

7mm-08 is an EXCELLENT ctg.

I'm looking to change my Savage 10FPXPLE to 6. 5-08 with an 1-8" twist.

Flat shooting gun that will reach out pretty far, and have little to no recoil.

The Sierra 155 gr 6. 5mm will really do it's job at long range. Oo.

It's simple to change a barrel on a Savage.

Thanks for all the info. I did a search on the 7mm-08 when I bought it and didn't turn up much. I think I've read more info here than I found in my search :)

I'm sure I'll leave it like it is. Just wondering about the possibilities. I may have to learn to do my own handloading as there never seems to be much selection in factory ammo.
