I would have to admire his ingenuity, but why build something that you can buy? I also wonder how long that spring will live inside the exhaust stream.

Looks like a common exhaust valve so it should hold up good. I too question why one would reinvent the wheel. You can find a used system on eBay pretty cheap - that's how I did it.
