Need some help with this Ferd.

Ok, now I've done it! Our 1992 Nissan 240sx has had a squeak coming from underneath the car when the clutch was pushed in. It was annoying me so I crawled underneath the car and pulled back the dust boot that covers the clutch 'withdrawal lever' (engages and disengages the clutch). I was going to spray some lube on the lever to try to eliminate the squeak, but before I even sprayed anything, I MANUALLY moved the lever and engaged and disengaged the clutch a few times from under the car to see if I could pinpoint the squeak. After I did this, I had my wife got in the car and pushed on the clutch pedal a few times. The first time she pushed it down, it took forever for the pedal to come back up.

To make a long story short..... Now the clutch has a huge amount of sloppy free play (that it never had before) and it catches right close to the floor. (before it caught about halfway up) I did NOTHING else to the clutch except move the lever manually from underneath the car.

What did I do???  I've got a wife that's ****** off at me because I couldn't leave well enough alone and I screwed up an otherwise normal (albeit squeaky)clutch on her ride! So much for my shadetree mechanic abilities...

Any help/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve (in the doghouse)

I assume its a hydraulic clutch. If so bleed it and I think you will be OK. You bleed them just like brakes. Pump the pedal a few times, hold it down and open the bleeder. Do this a few times and then pump it for a little bit and you should be ok if that was the problem. My 4x4 toyota was the same way if you messed with the fork on it. It also had a squeek :D that squeek lived through a new slave cylunder and a new clutch lol.

You might get away with just pumping it a bit, let it sit a spell and pump it some more. You probably pushed all the fluid back into the master cyl and need to let it pump back to the slave. Worth a try before you start making a mess.

When you thought you were disengaging the clutch under the car by hand you were actually going the wrong direction and disengaging the clutch yoke from it's pivot point(might be a ball)this would be on the side of the yoke toward the rear of the vehicle. You would not be able to disengage the clutch by hand. You might be able to pull the boot back and put the yoke back where it is supposed to be. bg

Thanks guys!

I bled the clutch tonight and all is well. :D The squeak is still there but he!! with it, I not going to screw around with it anymore!

At least I'm out of the doghouse now. . :D
