Nissan Frontier Diesel Runner Announced

Looks like Nissan and Cummins are exploring a 2.8L, 200HP, 350TQ compact diesel for the Nissan Frontier pickup.

I hope they hurry .I want a small diesel truck , not an over grown 1/2 ton .My god every year they make them bigger and bigger and its just sheet metal .

I hope they can do it. What's frustrating is these little diesel trucks are all over the world, and have been for decades. They were here at one time, too....and seemed to sell well enough to have a cult following.

Is it all on the EPA, or is it the American consumer machine wanting bigger bigger bigger?

I don't think you can blame the Punishment Agency for the lack of small diesel trucks; they were all gone before there were any emission standards. Many were almost useless for any type of work, and their 50-60 HP didn't go too far, even thirty years ago. I do, however, think there is a market for one, as all the hype on the ill-fated Mahindra had shown. Perhaps the Nissan will be the first at the party.

I had an 85 s10 with an Isuzu diesel 45mpg but gutless.

Most of those early diesels dint have turbos or intercoolers .Even the 4 cyl Cummins now has 200 hp .My 96 6cyl only has 180 .I do get 20 to 22 mpg and its paid for so to make me buy new it better be exactly what I want .

My friend had a Isuzu Pup. Although reliable,it was a noisy,smokey,gutless POS.
On the other hand my friend who's very down on diesels drove a Toyota Hilux 5-speed diesel in Nicaraqua. He loved it. I think a simple,manual trans diesel small truck would sell here provided it didn't have a 4'bed.

Bill, how do you like the truck otherwise? Build quality, materials, design, etc etc?

So far I've been very pleased with it. I had never owned a Nissan before, but my son's had one for years & has had excellent luck with it. Mine's a SE (now "SV") crew cab with the V6, auto, 4WD, with the towing package. I've been especially impressed with the mileage- almost 21 hwy, which I consider to be excellent, it being 4WD.

Heads up! Just got latest issue of DIESEL PROGRESS and theres an article on the ISV 5.0. A picture of the cam cover off shows a chain driven inner cam with gear to gear for the other cam . Uses glow plugs. I checked the website and its not there yet....

My little D50 diesel had the 4D55 turbo Mitsubishi engine. Drove pretty much just like a Mitsu 2.6 gas engine option, or for those more familiar with the Toyota, a 22R.

Really a great little engine; the truck had issues and I chose to sell it over fixing it up, but sorta wish I still had it.

A friend of mine had a pair of them, a 2WD and a 4WD. The 2WD was very peppy and economical, I could get 40 MPG if I drove it on the highway. However, they both suffered from rust and his "deferred" maintenance. He sold the pair of them for $1500 IIRC- the 2WD needed major engine work and the 4WD had rust issues.

Mine was rust free for quite awhile but once it started, it went fast. It had some electrical and suspension issues, too.

Would've been worth fixing up but I just don't have the time. Seems most all of the little 80s trucks from Japan had similar rust issues. I would've loved to have bought a more modern mini truck with a diesel, but for whatever reason we can't get them here.
