I haven't used the 4wd in my 2001 since mid winter and after getting on some wet grass I stayed there. I am assuming the lever mechanically engages the transfer case but what locks in the axles? Where do I begin to look for problems? Thanks.

The axle is actuated by the CAD. If you look on the passenger side of your front axle, there is a little vacuum motor hooked to a cast housing which is bolted to the axle. Inside there, there is a fork that slides a collar to engage or disengage the axle shaft. The most likely problems are either vacuum related(often one of the lines pulls off), or that the vacuum motor is not longer working properly.

There are many good posts on this that you can find using the search feature.

Thanks EKlem. I crawled under there yesterday and took a look at the CAD. Everything seemed fine except the can was a little loose and I wondered if that was leaking. Looking some more I saw a vacuum line off over by the transmission. I don't know how long it has been, I've been driving the first gen all winter and never needed four wheel drive till the wet grass had me duped. The family really enjoyed rescuing me. Easy fix. Thanks again.
