Just read on car-truck that as of 9-18 the buzz is that it is possible the 48 might not make it till 2004!!!!:mad:

I had heard this a couple weeks ago from a fleet mgr, BUT a member (can't remember who of the top of my head) said he recently drove one :confused:

I'd like to stay on top of this, among other things;)

DC gives Cummins plenty of "say" as to when new transmissions will be ready, since the powertrains are shipped as a unit (DC sends the trannies to Cummins, then Cummins sends the engine/trans to the assembly plants - or at least that was the previous MO). Cummins delayed the NV5600 as much as Dodge did 3 years ago. You won't see the 48RE as an option until both DC and Cummins give the green light.

Personally, I'm back to my original plan of waiting til 2004. 5 to order a 3500 Quad DRW 4x4 with the EGR HO and 48RE. I'd rather have the engine intended to run on low-sulfur diesel anyway.

2004.5 EGR

I've been debating whether or not to throw this out, but at the Cummins intoduction at the TDR rally in IN the Cummins spokesman indicated that it might be possible that Cummins might meet 2004 EPA regs. without EGR. People were shocked to hear that given the fact that they are already building EGR engines for others. People pressed him on the likelyhood of this and after a little while he qualified this as from him personally and not the official word from Cummins, but he seemed very confident. The more he was asked about it the more certain his response seemed. Hope this doesn't start a wildfire!:-{}

It's possible Cummins could meet federal emissions without EGR, but probably not California. It's to Dodge's benefit to be able to sell a 50-state diesel, instead of the detuned California engine they have now. EGR would also allow the HO to be sold in CA-emission states (CA, MA, ME, and maybe others in the future).

I'm sure there's a market for HO/48RE trucks in California that Dodge just can't touch right now. We're talking 70 hp and 95 lb-ft they can't have.

JRG, if you want an HO Auto, why not go with the current 250hp Auto truck and then have it BOMBed right by BD, DTT or ATS? And from other posts I've seen it is only a matter of programming to jump the motor to 305hp or more. You'd probably be money ahead going that route, I'm sure the new transmission/HO will be $$. You'd have the warranty issue though, depends on how much BOMBing you plan on.

And NO mfg warranty on a $40,000 truck? I'm not sold on that idea completely. How many people would buy a sedan, spend $5,000 on it to give it the power needed, voiding the warranty, when they could have just bought a V6 for $3,000 in the first place?

I believe we should be somewhat patient and see what happens.

I just want to keep on this. Someone has already driven one! It's in the new ordering info! But with these rumors I will believe it when I see it!

i don't understand that. we don't even have diesel emissions testing, or gas that i know of. :confused:

Just finished doing the research!
