No 4x4, No Cruise, No Heat at Feet...

For awhile now my heat would only blow out the defrost vents (I have not taken the time to dive in on it to see what is going on) and my cruise went out about 2 weeks ago (the light in steering wheel, will light up) and now
I tried to run in 4x4 the other day and the truck would not lock the axle. Even tried 4-lo. I ran it about 6 miles in 4-hi and the axles would never engage.
Is there any chance that all of this could be related to the oil contamination problem.
The check valve was installed back in Sept.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

Your on the right track since all these items run off vacuum. If you have a gauge I would start checking lines from the somewhere close to the motor and work your way out from there if it checks okay. I don't have a '96 FSM so I can't tell you what kind of vacuum your suppose to see so maybe someone else can add that for you.

Had the exact same thing happen to me a couple years ago. It was a loose vacuum connection on the firewall just under the windshield. I have a 96 & a FSM. E-mail if you need some specifics.

You for sure have a vacuum leak. One of the most common places is at the cruise control under the drivers side battery. If these darn diesels weren't so loud you'd be able to hear it,still might hear it though if you put your ear to it. I'll bet it's the line to the cc though,unless the vacuum pump when out.

The same thing happened to me on my 96 dodge gasser. Only I didn't have 4x4.
It was like Illflem said, the cruise control.
The hose became hard at the connection and cracked then fell off.
Look under the battery [drivers side]

The vacuum line id routed by turbo,sometimes it will fall down and get melted by the heat of the exhaust,mine got vibrated thru from thr transmission dipstick,Id check that vacuum line first before going under the battery.

Now's the time you wished you had a gasser. A short shot of ether/wd 40 at a location and the eng rev's Bingo!!!Not true here!!
