Well, I lost my nut today. Or at least I hope so. From my reaserch so far, it looks like replacing the nut should be rather simple and low cost :) , but most of the posts Ive read report only 6-7 thousand miles before its off again.

Loos like Standard's mainshaft/gear kit is the way to go, but how much more is involved? How deep do I have to dig into the transmission for that? The only gearbox Ive been into before was a raod ranger-- ALL the way appart-- but that was like 7 years ago.

I dont want to do this twice, and hauling season is fast approaching.

there are five ways to lose fifth gear. lets hope its the nut or the bottom synco. The main shaft fix will do nothing about fixing the nut. It just has more splines so the gear won't strip. the mail shaft fix isn't too bad, but a little much for a novice, take it for what its worth.

My Dads 5th gear just went on his 97 last week. He took it to the Dodge dealer and it was about $700. 00 to get done. There was an outstanding recall on the truck aswell, so they were able to do that while it was in the shop. The truck had 500,000 kilometers on it.

Out of morbid curiosity, what are the other ways to loose 5th. I checked out quad4x4- very nice. 1 1/2 years from now id do the tourque king shaft and rebuild. I read of the downs of the fully splined shaft, and agree that it would pretty much be a waste. I'm thinking I might do what a guy here called a "hillbilly nut job" or somthing of the like, and just start saving up for the permenant repair/rebuild.

Those good ole 5th gear nuts!!! haha Well i have had it fixed twice and both times it only lasted for about a year, and it wasn't just the nut that went either, the first time it took the idler gear, the second time it took the idler and the rev gear. So the third time i bought a rebuilt transmission, the entire thing and replaced it. It has a hole different setup, and was rebuilt by NV not some small little shop. Plus i don't know how many mile you have on the truck but, it might be a better idea to just drop in a rebuild. Mine has been great for a little over a year now (knock on wood) The rubild cost me about $1500. 00 with a new clutch kit and both times it was fixed it was around $1900. 00 Each time , you do the math.

obert, I replaced the nut once and it lasted about 15000 miles before it slipped off again. The last time I just tack welded it on and so far has been good for almost 25000 miles and it didn't cost me a dime for a fix. I know this isn't the proper way to fix this problem but I was short on jingle and needed a quick fix to get me back on the road and buy me some time until I can get it fixed right. Jeff
