Archived Truck stopped running on highway...?

I just reecently installed a westach fuel pressure gauge on my 2002. When I start the truck, my fuel pressure jumps to around 15 psi and stays there for about 30 seconds to a minute and then falls to zero. I checked it with a manual gauge and it did the exact same thing. I checked power at the lift pump and I am getting right at 14v. I don't think I am losing power to the lift pump because when I saw the pressure drop, I unplugged it to check for power again and the truck died. Other then this pressure problem, the truck runs great. The truck has a drag comp and DD2's. Any suggestions before I take it to the dealer?

JCatterton,

After the pressure falls to zero does the pressure come back up?

When the pressure falls to zero does engine die?

If the pressure doesn't come back up and engine says running than guages must be wrong. They mite need calibrating, I don't believe this is hard to do.

If pressure comes back or jumps back and forth (naturally) your not getting a constant feed of fuel for some reason (pump mite be going or electrical problem= pump or guage).

If pump stays at zero mite be electrical problem at guage also but that wouldn't explain why the manual guage acts the same way.

Are your confused yet!

M Mule, When the pressure falls to zero, it stays there and doesn't come back up until I shut the truck off and start it back up. Then it all happens again. When the pressure drops, the truck still runs great. We both may be confused now!

Well if stays at zero it's not spiking.

I presumed it was electrical guage, correct?

Where did you hook up the sensor or hose(if manual)?

Where did you hook up manaul pressure guage?

Does the vp144 have return fuel valve?

Oh come on Larry give it a go, don't be .

It's not the fuel pump, or something plugged up in the fuel system, because the engine just won't run on zero fuel pressure for very long! #@$%!: ( It will run for a short time as long as the filter has fuel in it. )

So take a guess we won't :-laf. just :) a little.

I think JCatterton will figure it out before we do. :D

First when you state the truck , will the pointer move to max reading as key is turned to on position ,then fall to O then as key is turned to start and motor starts will the pointer move to max or over 12 psi ? If not some thing is not right. Is sendrer mounted off motor ,If not move it , Is sender grounded ? call westeck for help? Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY P. S the motor can run off the injector pump without the lift pump . Flow test the lift pump is way to go . Ron

My lift pump just crapped out yesterday.

I was towing my TT through Chicago yesterday, and my lift pump took a crap. Fuel pressure went from 12 psi to 0 psi in about two seconds, and the truck lost power. I managed to get over to the emergency lane and the truck would barely idle on about 4 cylinders. I had a nice cloud of white smoke behind me. I managed to limp off the interstate in first gear, and made it to a gas station parking lot. Luckily, a Cummins dealership was 6 miles away. Got a new lift pump installed, and was back at 14 psi at idle and on my way. I was suprised that it failed all at once, and the truck immediately ran like crap. I've found a bunch of failed lift pumps on other people's trucks, and they didn't notice a problem with power output. Looks like it's time for a FASS or a Fuel Preporator. Or maybe a P 7100 :D I would have to agree with Ron, flow check the lift pump. I've seen a couple fail that acted just like yours. Did you take your pressure readings after the fuel filter? If so, I'd check the pressure before the filter just to make sure you don't have a filter problem. If it drops before the filter, and you have power to the lift pump, I'd guess it's the lift pump. Mine lasted 38,000 miles:rolleyes:

I borrowed a lift pump from a friend and put it on my truck. I now have fuel pressure all the time. Guess it was the lift pump, it just had strange symptoms. I'll try to get it to a dealer because it is under warranty and then I'll get a FASS. Thanks for all the help guys.
