Running down I-20 between B'ham and ATL at about 72 mph, pulling an empty trailer, 1/4 tank of fuel, A/C on, felt the truck loose power, then pick back up, about 10 miles later, going up a hill and it does same thing, this time it never recovers, coast to a stop on side of road, raise the hood and "look" at it, engine just spins, afraid my fuel gauge had gone bad and I was really out of fuel, cracked bleeder on top of filter and give lift pump a couple of pulls and get a little fuel at a time, some air, close bleeder plug, stil wont start, cracked an injector line and away it went, ran another 25 miles to fuel station and another 75 miles home after fill up... . is the lift pump getting week? 180,000 miles...

Cannot help with a fuel pump suggestion, but I always reset the trip meter when I refuel so I have a back up of fuel usage. When not towing, 800 km / 500 miles between refuel is normal, about half of that with a 7000 lb trailer in tow. Low fuel light usually comes on at around 820 km.

I bought a new lift pump right after this happened and have never put it on, haven't had anymore trble either, still dont understand what happened... .

I think I know exactly what happened cullmanboy. I had the same thing happened in my 1992. Towing a near empty trailer (10K GVW flatbed) on rolling hills down I-25, lost power, got it back, lost it again, got it back, then it went away completely.

It was my gas cap. Undo it and listen to see if it is pulling a vacuum. I went through the whole deal of lift-pumps, low-pressure bleed, high-pressure bleed at the pump and at the injectors, and searching all over heck for air leaks. It was the gas cap.

Now, the cap could be magnifying an air leak somewhere, or a weak lift pump, but so far, other than a bad tank of gas, no issues with this truck since loosening that cap.

thanks nordby, that explains it more than anything, I believe I remember mention of fuel cap trlbe before, but had forgotten it. The temp that day was about 95 degrees and running it hard ( 70 is hard on this truck, not a lot of power) with just a 1/4 tank of fuel must have created a vacuum. Now I'm glad jsimpson brought the subject back up. There was no fuel at all in the fuel filter, so I guess the pump had just sucked it dry, sure was scared for awhile, had cranked tractors before after running out of fuel, but was glad that I had the service manual with me that day. thanks
