I have a 2003 2500 4wd quadcab 335k on the odometer. 5. 9l auto with od.

Have not had a problem until the sub 32 degree weather.

Driving it on Monday xmas eve, no heat. Messed with the heater control knobs, turned it to recirculate ( like I would on a hot day needing AC) and heard a "vent door" slam in the dash. Heat came out .

Today get it dusted off from snow we had, no heat. Try the same "voodoo" to no avail. NO HEAT.

Temperature gauge for engine came up slowly as it usually does.

Today I even added a blocker for the grill , engine temp gauge went up to about 180-190. No heat.

Suspect a problem in the vent door area??

I run Cummins red coolant, it is full to max line in the overflow and radiator is full.

Top radiator hose is hollow , not full or hard.

Any and all comments are appreciated.

Sounds like you are having the blend door issues that many of us have faced. Do a forum search in the 3rd gen section of the site under "Blend Door" for plenty of reading on the subject. Also, take a look at heatertreater.com

BG,

Have you used this kit?

I had heat when I drove the truck later this afternoon. Probably the vent door.

Thanks for the response.

Haven't used the kit but since I have a Dodge I saved the info. Looks like pretty simple fix and keeps you from having to pull the dash to get the unit out. bg

i've installed the heater treater metal doors in 3 different trucks and have a set on the shelf for my own truck as soon as time allows. the blend air door can be replaced without pulling everything, but i really prefer to do it all at once with the dash out without cutting up the airbox.

I did the Heater Treater door replacement on mine. Works good now. Just don't use a smelly grease on the hinge points on the heater doors. It takes a long time for that stink to go away!

One thing I would check before you do anything: are the inlet and outlet heater hoses both hot when your truck is running? If not, your heater core may be plugged. Now is the time to replace your heater core and/or evaporator if they are leaking. You sure don't want to pull that dash apart again.

I get heat after playing with the controls long enough. But I will check heater hoses this morning.

Never smelled any antifreeze in cab.

Thanks again.

It sounds like you have heater door issues. I would replace them all at once. Not too hard to pull the dash. My cousin and I did mine in a day.
