Fuel gauage, Wacky...

Hi Guys, just purchased an 89 to fix up for my son, who is overseas in the desert defending our freedom. Problem one. Turn key to 'on' position and no wait to start light. Checked solenoids under hood and no power to the small wires. Where should I start?

Problem two. Previous owner claimed it was HARD starting lately and smoked the starter after installing a new lift pump. So I installed new starter, cause the old one was smoked, not just the contacts, bled the injector lines and she ran like a million bucks. Way better than my 24 valves. Anyhow shut it off, wait 30 minutes and no start, bleed lines, fires up, wait 30 minutes and repeat. I found the WIF sensor leaking on bottom of filter, so I changed it out with a sensorless filter. Still same problem. An old 12 valve nieghbor of mine says it's a problem in the fuel tank, bad pick up? I dunno.....

Thought I'd querry the experts before I rip the fuel system apart and reseal everything.

Thanks

Mike

First thing, are you related to the miser brothers; Heat miser and Snow miser?

Secondly, everyone, EVERYONE compares the performance of the first gen trucks with a quote-unquote "24 valve". I find that strange as I have nine buses w/24 valves and they don't run, well.

Thirdly, the fuel system is sucking air. It can sometimes be tough to locate such an air leak as they don't leak much fuel, rather, suck air. Check every inch of the suction side of the lift pump, then check the pressure side for any fuel leaks. If the injection pump seeps fuel, it will allow air in and drain back occures. Hard starting is the result. A "bad lift pump" will also allow drain back. If it is an OE style lift pump, it may have ruptured the diaphragm or a bad check valve.

Yeah they're like second cousins. New lift pump, I was thinking there was a washer or something that goes bad on a fitting near the IP.

If the PO replaced the lift pump, I think a good place to start would be to check the connections on there first...

The fuel heater can suck air in around the terminals too. It won't leak fuel, but that SOB will leak air easy enough.

(don't ask how I know :{ )

Also check the return line from the injectors all the back to the tank. If it's bad it will cause a hard start also.
