The Story.

My transmission acts funny. Occasionally goes into limp mode (I think) but if I manually shift to low it works ok. Always has a delayed 1-2 shift the first time after startup. I bought an Actron 9135 scanner and found 4 codes, P0720, P1763, P1693, & P0380. Replaced the Output Speed Sensor on the trans and P0720 and P1763 went away. Put the wire back on the heater relay and P0380 went away. P1693 could not be cleared at first. Drove to a shop to try a different scanner and P1763 was back. Drove home and successfully cleared all codes. The truck does seem to shift better and the delayed 1-2 upshift appears to be fixed. HOWEVER, on the way to the shop it didn't shift to 1 after a stop.

The Questions.

1. Planning to replace the governor solenoid and sensor. Is this necessary?

2. The MIL never came on. Are these codes not severe enough to light it?

3. A bunch of fine metal "dust" was on the OSS. Is this normal?

4. What is P1693? Does this mean a fault code has been registered in another module? Does the OBD port just talk to the PCM? How do you scan the ECM? (please don't say "trip to dealer") :(

Problem Solved

I had the governor speed sensor and solenoid replaced, the bands adjusted, and a filter and fluid change (AT+5). This cured the shifting problems but the torque converter lock and unlock problem returned. I thought this problem was solved by a software flash performed by the dealer about 2 years ago. I decided to try the KW5535 noise filter available from Diesel Transmission Technology. After a quick and easy install, my transmission works better than it ever has. FINALLY!
