GM announced today that 2002 would be the last year for Camaro & Firebird. Suppose customer outcry will save them?

I heard this a few months back from my cousin (GM Mechanic) - I figured he was full of I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER, but I guess not.

This is really hard to believe. Kinda like McDonald's dumping the Big Mac!

But they are coming out with a new creation, it's a mix between a Camero and a small utility pickup.

SO I have heard... ...

Complete hearsay... ... ... ... ... ... ..... but I've also heard that Corvette will be splintering into their own division. Heard this from the same source that I heard about the Camara and Firebird deletion.

Anyways, their only Chevy's, right?:D

Good riddance!

... they were really starting get ugly too.

From what i've read, in the time they are on hiatus they will be receiving a major redesign. I've seen a few drawings and some have quite a retro "Old Z28" look... squarish and raked.

sad but true...

I heard rumor this as far back as a year in Popular Hotrodding, or one of the other mags I think.

I love the Camreo, love the way it looks too. I don't care to much for the Mustangs now days, but to each their own. I have seen the drawings of the "next" retro Camero and like it too. Just don't know how it will be off paper. I give it 5 years until the comeback, that would be a 40th aniversery.

The SSR is the replacement i beleive. It is ulgy, "futureistic" PT Cruser type style, that was done in Australia origanly. It is a cross between the El Cameino, and the ???. Last I heard it's got a 6 liter LS1. Just have to wait and puke, i mean see.

GET REAL!

GM - or ANY company operates on $$$, NOT "public outcry" or the fanatical whining of a loyal few. If The Camaro/firebird platforms had developed enough customers, they wouldn't be scraping the line. There are many avenues of "blame" for the demise of the Camaro/Firebird line - everything from poor GM marketing, to the inability of GM to meet CAFE/EPA standards while continuing to place the F-bodies on the market. Ford, on the other hand, seems to be doing well with the competing Mustang line...

Go figure...

By the way, *I* own a '98 Camaro SS...

The Camaro was one of the few GM cars with any styling. It is a sad day when the Camaro and Firebird go away, and you get the Avalanche and Aztek for a replacement.

I have ridden in both late model camaros and mustangs. IMHO(and I am not a ford fan at all) The mustang is just flat out a better car. A little tighter build quality and doesn't have all the GM noises. I personaly like the firebird for looks over the three cars but the Mustang is what I would buy(I can't believe I just typed that lol). And when it comes to going fast you can actualy get to the motor on a mustang to some extent. Its hard to work on but its not halfway under the dash like the GM cars. More abundant affordable bolt ons for the mustang. Not sure but isn't the mustang Cheaper?? And there is about twice as many standard shift mustangs as there is Camaros. An automatic Z28 is a real boring drive.

I think GM is doomed. They just handed Ford more Customers by doing this. And the Aztec and the Avalanche are horrible. Cadillac Has a version of the Avalac even!! The aftermarket is doomed with those trucks lol, GM already put all the cheezy plastic truck accesories on them, what the hell is Lund Gonna do ;)

there were several places taking names

to help prevent the loss of the Camaro & Bird. I've seen drawings for a 2004 revival of the Camaro, it looks like the Bird is gone for good. Only time will tell.

Goodbye-Goodriddance!

Like every other muscle car, they should have killed the whole line after 1970 anyway. They got Nader'd into heavy slush-mobiles... and later, they fell into the same trap as the Nissan Z car: take a perfectly fun little sports car, and start adding crap like power seats, power windows, a/c, etc... and turn it into a heavy, underpowered pig that is too mushy for a sports car person, and too stiff for a slush-lover. Nothing quite like a car that doesnt do any one thing particularly well!

UMMMmm BCFAST...

"and turn it into a heavy, underpowered pig that is too mushy for a sports car person"

WELL, Camaro SS's like mine (see pointer in sig) are good for mid 13's in the quarter, at about 105 mph - they consistently do QUITE well in autocross against some rather serious European sporty-car stuff...

Try comparing some of THOSE numbers against some of the nostalgic "muscle cars" of years gone by, and I think you will see the SS's and similar Firebirds do VERY well for themselves in the straights AND the curves!;) :p

I frequently get a kick out of some specialty road-burning hotrod, with a seriously warmed over big block as featured in some rod magazine - and after ALL that cubic money spent, and ALL the performance and handling mods - they END UP with a car that is ALMOST as decent in handling and performance as my relatively stock '98 SS... AND, with fuel consumption that will break the bank - and a ride that will break yer BUTT! :p :D

Plastic Shortage

I actualy think GM discontinued these two lines after using there plastic resources to death. Seems they had run out of things to make Plastic on the F-body line without making plastic motor parts. They decided to use the wealth of Plastic knowledge they aquired from the F-body line and apply it to more important things, like the Avalance truck and the ohhh soo cooollll Plastic pickup beds. Plastic is a Valuable resource at GM and wasting it on a "High Performance" car that people were no longer buying enough of was just not Economical ;)

BFD is the way I look at it. I am sure they will come out with something better in the near future. Unless they vow to become like DC and have one High $$ High Performance car and thats it. The Closest thing to muscle that DC has produced since the Viper(Heh Heh Mucho Muscle) is the LOL hold on... . LOL the DAKOTA R/T that was a lame attempt at Fast if I have ever seen one. The lets take a Truck motor in put it in something smaller to make it fast idea would have only been good for the V-10(Now that would be one tire smokin Dak). Oh well enough of off subject Rambling

UMMmmm - well. since this IS a Dodge group - have you checked the "plastic quotient" in today's Dodge stuff - from trucks to minivans? And YEAH, that goes for the VIPER as well! :p

They certainly have their share!;)

As far as plastic necessarily being BAD, the Corvette has been using a form of plastic since its inception, and seem to be doing well, and rather highly regarded on BOTH sides of the pond...

Take all the plastic out of ANY of the current cars on the road today, and you'd probably be driving (pushing?) a vehicle that resembles swiss cheese due to all the vacant areas left after plastic removal.

OH - and as far as plastic being used in engines, MANY coverings and some internal parts currently used by ALL manufactirers - valve covers, etc. , are plastic, and the intake on my Camaro SS are composite material - lighter and less prone to warpage, so they say...

AND, the beds used on some of the sporty-type steside Dodge trucks are made of - you guessed it - PLASTIC!;) :p

Motto is:

If YOU drive in a plastic vehicle, DON'T throw stones!;) :D
