I got tired of hearing it every time I jump in the truck. (well, it didn't work ALL the time) Also when working in the truck with te radio on, etc. A very simple operation, and it's gone. I still have the lights-on and seatbelt chime. (like the first, tolerate the latter)

Woo Hoo Oo. Oo.

(ain't it funny how a simple mind is so easily pleaed :D )

Ok! So are you sharin the secret. I posted an inquiry about how to take this off as I listen to my stereo in the montains every weekend, but in the acc position with the doors open (so the music can be heard, it is incessantly ringing. So the only way was to leave the key in the on position.

So please tell us, Please?

The way I bypass it is to just open the driver's side door and flip up the door latch mechanism. That way the sensor in the door thinks it's closed. To open it again, just pull the inside door handle and stick your finger in there to pry the "jaws" back into their normal position.

OK, remove the 2 screws at the bottom of the dash panel under the steering column. (I think the book calls it steering column opening cowl) The upper part has a couple spring clips that hold it in. Gentle tug straight back, and it's out. Then on the left side of the steering column just below the plastic covers that go around the steering column, is a connector with a bunch of wires. (14 if I remember correctly) The fifth one down is a small (20guage) light blue wire. Give it a clip and enjoy the silence. Put the panel back on, the 2 screws back in, and you're done.

The book said something about the key-in sensor starting some kind of timer. (dome lights maybe?) I don't know that I will ever notice or miss it, but it will be disabled because it will never sense the key in. My key-in sensor only worked part of the time anyway.

I noticed on my current truck that with the keys in the ignition I could not lock the doors ... It has come in handy a couple of times when I jumped out of the truck, in a hurry, hitting the door locks as I went out without the keys in my hand. I am not sure if cutting this wire dissables that handy feature but it is worth looking into.

Yes it is possible to lock the doors with the key in. (didn't try it before)

I was cleaning the inside of the truck and reprogramed my lock system (one push and ALL doors unlock, no horn on locking) It was really nice to listen to the radio with no chime, though.

Maybe I will hide a key where I could get it if I need to. I rarely lock and the keys are left in it most of the time, but an accidental locking could ruin my day. (this is also my first truck with power locks)

Thanks for pointing me to this, Bighammer.

I had another solution to the "key in" dinger situation. I ground just a bit off the tip of the key. If you then pull the key out ever so slightly (wile still switched to "on" or "acc"), it will not contact the switch to let it know the key is still in. Doors can be locked with key in, truck running (which I like to do when going into a quickie store or to pick something up right quick at a take out place, taking my remote or spare key). The radio light goes off but the dinger does not sound. I want to totally disable the damn thing. I do not want the thing to sound for the annoying "lamp out" indicator either. If anyone knows where the thing is, I can fill the "speaker" with silicone or punch it out. Thanks for any help!

Now that is really clever! No ill effects?

My ignition has been pretty loose for awhile now. I've noticed that in the ACC position unless I have the key just right, the door chime doesn't come on but neither do the radio/IC lights.

Also, do you think that by clipping this wire the horn blaring/lights flashing reverse w/ the door open BS would stop?

This trick won't work on an 06. I tried. The computers knows the key is in reguardless of the wires being cut and weird things happen. What I did is what similiar to what rbattelle did (I wish I had thought of his trick though. ) I took apart the ignition an removed the small contact that makes the connection to the Key-in circuit (what the tip of the key pushes on). It won't chime with the key in and door open, but it will chime in the acc position. So I just put in a switch to the radio that is on a unswtiched circuit to listen to the radio with the doors open.

I do that too! Only problem is that when I shut the door I get a loud BANG because I forgot to open the door!:{

I'm going to try that!

bighammer,
Which truck are you referring to?
Your 94, 03 or both?
I would like to do my 98 and my 06.
TIA, Ray

I did this on my 03. On the 94, it was as easy as finding the offensive little buzzer and yanking it. That took care of the seatbelt and door open buzz. On the 03, I wanted to keep the headlight reminder, so removing the noisemaker wasn't the solution.

I like the idea of a shortened key. ;) Pretty brilliant.

No problems at all. I discovered that if the key was "positioned" just right, it would not "ding" when the door was opened and the key switched to "accessory" position. I tried polishing off a tiny bit at the very tip of the key and it works every time now. Just want to disable the dam dinger totally now.

On the '94, you can pop out the door switch and simply unplug it, then pop it back in place. On the '98 and up trucks, you can turn off the interior lights with the dimmer knob. On the earlier trucks, the damn interior lights come on when the door is open, along with the buzzer. I unplugged the buzzer (in the fuse panel box by driver door) and wedged a piece of cardboard beside it to hold it unplugged. I can still turn on the interior lights with the dimmer switch or by pushing the "map" lights on/off.

Anybody know WHERE the "speaker" is on the 3rd gen trucks? It will no longer work if I can find that POS!!!!

Be careful with the grinding the key tip off. Sounds brilliantly simple so I tried it on the wife's Liberty. Used a hand file and it didn't take much to make the key malfunction. I goes in too far now (and the chime still works) and you really have to jiggle it around to get it to rotate to the on or acc position. This key will be relegated to the spare. Just be cautious if you try this trick. Those darn SIM keys are expensive.
