Pac Brake Update

Came home from work yesterday, had a BIG cup of coffee and went to work on getting to the dreaded dowel pin. Joe (from Eureka) e-mailed the details (Thanks Joe), got the seal. The job is real easy, fan removal is a pain without a 36mm fan wrench, but the rest is a breeze. 2 1/2 hours, with breaks... I'm Union!

The pin was flush with the inside of the case so the staking or peening idea was not the cure, the pin was bottomed out in its bore. I went with the fender washer fix. Remaining bolts were loose enough to be of concern... IMO. All was blue loctited and put together.

Nice feeling, I would be concerned every morning parking at work cause ya gotta go over two sets of BUSY RR tracks to park!

Mines a '95 3500 with 154k +. Not to cause a riff, but I would go with the take apart fix due to the bolt factor.

Sounds good Statland. I am with you on taking the cover off rather than the other method. This way you can check the gear case bolts and it's a stealth fix. It is also a good time to do the crank seal.

I have not done mine yet but plan to soon. Thanks for the good word on how easy this job is. I figured it wouldn't be that hard by the looks of it.

Mark, About a month ago I had suggested pinning the pin, but in thinking it over what if... . 1. ) You drill and never hit the pin, its out too far or gone.
2. ) You break a drill, happens to the best of us. 3. ) Your'e just not sure what happened. Well we know the answers, ya gotta take it apart!

The thing that bugged me is I remember reading a post that the dowel hole was supposed to be a blind or "stepped" hole, then why was my pin flush and bottomed out?

I hope this is the last bug that can grenade the big 6!

I see you live in Moab, what a nice place, Mom and I went there a few years back and the only bad part was I needed to get my back fixed at a chiropractor! Utah is a one of a kind place... love it!

I must say after using the jig method on two trucks today, it is a very easy bit of insurance. I can understand the pros of removing the cover, but when the jig method is so easy I see it as the best way, especially when 99% of us will probably never have a problem anyway.
