Replacement Front Bumper on a '93

I had my 275 gallon tank filled again last week with red fuel (to use in my backhoe of course). The day after, I dumped 1gal of drain oil from my diesel rabbit into the tank. The hose coming out of the tank is clear so you can easily see color. Yesterday I filled my ... er. . ah. . backhoe and suddenly the hose shows pitch black. I poured a gallon into a bucket and cannot see any hint of red. The only indication is a very slight hint of pink in the foam when pouring. Shine a light through it? Nada! Only problem is now I cannot see water in the clear filter bowl on my tank.

With a ratio of 275:1 I think this fits under the common consensus about adding drain oil to fuel. 1/2oz:gallon. Adds lubricity too #ad

Yup, it's good!
Every diesel boat, bulldozer, backhoe, generator, etc. around uses red dyed diesel. I get mine from the same place, but mine is black #ad

This could be a rumor but I recently heard if you buy offroad diesel in 1000 gallon quantities you have the option of getting it undyed. I feel the offroad fuel is far superior to the onroad due to 100k miles of accidental usage.

If the DOT really wanted to check, they could take a tailpipe soot sample, and the chemical in the red dye would show up. You are just getting rid of the most obvoius way to detect off road fuel. The tailpipe method is more accurate, and faster.

I would make sure it is mixed very well. If you just poured it in, I doubt it mixed very much. And being heavier than diesel, it will go to the bottom. You may have some pretty concentrated stuff at the bottom - more like 5:1 or 10:1.

A fleet I once drove for had a Cummins issued machine that sucked the used crankcase oil out of the 855 cu. in. block and recycled it into the fuel tank.
The shop would have to remind the drivers NOT to top off the fuel tank(s) when the rig was scheduled in for service.
The day after servicing, the truck didn't perform quite as strong- not enough Cetane in 32 quarts of used crank oil?

$1. 229, not a huge savings but very convenient. Diesel running $1. 55/$1. 65 at stations around here.

I read somewhere (here I think) that 10:1 is acceptable to Cummins. This has been discused because some overtheroad rigs constantly burn their oil and automatically replace it with fresh.

Or something like that #ad

LarryB,

Just wondering what you paid for it on that side of the US?? I just checked the price here in VA (we used it in our boat)... . $1. 279. Seems a bit high to me... especially when buying 300 gallons at a time!!!

This was a regular practice when I was an O/O. I never did it, but I was told to strain the oil through a cheesecloth.
I got 550 gallons of #2 oil last week for 1. 02 9/10 a gallon.

Yea... me too. #ad

Just be sure you use a good injector cleaner. I find that Power service diesel kleen is the best for this.
Home heating oil (red) may or may not have this added package from the refinery. I recently spoke to the oil truck driver at my job. He told me that home heating oil, at the refinery he pulls out of, is the same thing as #2 diesel. A 1/8" s. s. tube meters in the die if the tax isnt payed. FYI
I've found that the truck is quieter, and gets better mileage. Ahhh..... through accidental testing. #ad
