No more suck down on the filter minder + sweet turbo music!

I noticed that I was sucking the filter minder down about a third of the way with an empty truck and a pretty clean filter. I wanted to put in a Cool Blue Tube and a cold air intake, but like to build/break my own stuff. :-laf I got the Blue Tube and did my own intake.

EDIT: Sorry I missed the pics the first time. You'll see in the one picture the "SECRET WEAPON AGAINST DUST"! I figure if the dog will drink out of the toilet and lick the floor, she will do a great job filtering out debris from the intake! The hardest part was cutting out the hole to the correct diameter and carefully shaving away the ribs. I used a toilet ring that came with a metal flange. I popped the flange off the plastic piece and it snapped perfectly into the box. I used "Christmas trees" to make sure the hose and adapter would stay all in one piece. I can hear the turbo a whole lot better too. Now, about that TAG...

So what did you put in there for a filter? The paper stock ones are rather restrictive. I'd say throw an AMSOIL Nanofiber drop-in filter in there and really take advantage of your awesome mod. They flow better than paper and are reusable with no wet washing and no oiling. Just blow out with 20psi of air.

Nice job! Cleanest airbox mod I've seen yet!

That looks just like mine. I just did the same thing about two weeks ago for the same reason. Just checked on it the other day, still in one piece and no water intrusion. Once it warms up I'm going to JB weld the fitting in the air box just for piece of mind.

I haven't done anything to replace the original filter... yet. I still have a brand new one from the 4-2-1 from Geno's. Since I don't have any other power mods yet, I'll use that one up first.

You will find the OE filter (the actual DC part) is quite restrictive by itself... the airbox isn't much better.

I would pull mine in until I changed to a Napa Gold at 3500 miles, then it sorta stopped pulling it in the entire way... then I swiss cheesed the airbox.

Where did you get the parts and pieces for your cool air? I have not been able to find all the pieces you are showing. Thanks for the information.

my stock box with amsoil nano doesn't suck minder down at all, even on a dyno @ 3400 rpm. Should I modify it? (box) Seems like its getting enough air if minder doesn't move. Stock would go down 2/3rds.

I too did a similar mod, but I used slightly different materials. I ended up hooking the lower end up to the open fog light location in the bumper for somewhat of a "ram air" effect. Even so, with a stock type air filter, my filter minder is easily pulled down.

I got my parts at Lowe's. A toilet ring, the drain cover, hose from the yard drain area, along with an adapter that happened to fit. Then I picked up some Christmas trees to hold it together. The toilet ring had a metal ring on it. I was snapped on and I was able to snap it off. The tabs that held it on snapped onto the airbox. Total cost, about $20, not counting that for the short piece of hose I had to buy a 10' length.

I have the fog lights, so I couldn't run to there. Another way to do it would be to use sewer hose from an RV. It's not 4", but it's flexible enough to run wherever you want.

What we've been seeing on 3rd gen trucks is that in stock form, with stock airbox and stock paper filter, the filter minder gets sucked down. Add a performance chip and it can really suck it down. The paper filter is the restriction point, not the box, on a stock setup.

Then, when you drop in a Nanofiber air filter, as was shown in a review done in the most recent TDR magazine, you find that the filter is no longer the restriction point because the Nano flows so well. It is the factory box that is now the restriction point. Modifying the box will allow the Nano to flow to its full potential.

Modifying the airbox is great, but if you are still running a paper filter, you haven't fixed the problem.

To clarify from my last post. This review is found in TDR issue 54, page 126.
