Hi guys!! I'm new to this site and just bought a 98. 5 24 valve slt cab & half. I'v drove truck for about 15 years and so I know a bit about diesels. And of course there's alot I don't know about the technical aspects of the Cummins. I'v got a question for you diesel sniffing gear heads that reside in the wonderful common wealth of Pa. Are diesel pick-ups required to have mufflers? If not, how can I make my Cummins louder than a frieght train running through your living room,or my neighbors?

Easiest 2 things are to remove your silencer ring inside your turbo for alot more turbo sing and remove The mufler for more bark. Just a word of advice about the exhaust, I took off both the resonator and mufler at the same time and the drone inside the cab was unbareable on the highway and especially trailering. A few weeks after that I put the resonator back on and the drone was almost gone and outside bark didn't change too much. Now I'm all smiles with the sound of my cummins!

If you wand even more turbo sing, remove the duct work that extracts the air from inside the fender. When I did that it also was too loud for me.

My muffler fell off and landed under a tree in my back yard about three years ago. It has recently upgraded to a 5" mufflerless exhaust, and I have never had an inspection problem in PA.

As for your question regarding a muffler in PA, If I remember the vehical code correctly, you only need one muffling device post catalist.

Our trucks do not have a cat (if yours does, it is a diesel, and the inspection mechanic will never know if it falls off, but I am not saying to tamper with your emissions system  ), then the vehical only needs one muffling device.

Great, also, accroding to PA code, a compressor housing on a turbo quantifies as a muffling device, therefore, your truck already has all the emission devices required to pass PA State Inspection.

Thanks fellas!! That makes me feel alot better. I just saw that I can purchase A bolt on straight pipe kit for 76 bucks. Ya can't beat that with A dead cat!!!

Heck,

Go to your local NAPA and get 7' of 3"OD pipe, and two 3" IN to IN couplers, and 4 3" clamps. That should cost less than $76. It is a very simple fix, and will sound much better.

I paid $50 to have a muffler shop hack out my muffler and weld in a straight pipe. I was in and out in like 20 minutes and didn't get a speck of soot on me. I also left the resonator in and lost the fenderwell air boot.
