I am presently broken down in Hinton, Alberta, Canada waiting for the local Dodge dealer to do something with my Cummins.

BACKGROUND: Have towed a 28 foot fifth wheel to Canada with no problems. I disconnected the trailer and went on a sight-seeing trip and parked the truck. Came back after a short walk and started down the road again. Soon, I heard a chime and a message to check gauges. Everything looked normal. Then the oil pressure dropped to 0, and as I watched it went back up to 40 and alternated between 0 and 40 at about a 5 second interval. I parked the truck and had it towed to the nearest dealer, Hinton Chrysler, Hinton Alberta.

Dealer replaced the sending unit and instrument panel gauge still doing same. Dealer then checked oil pressure at Schrader valve and some port on the oil filter--both showed no oil pressure. They then checked pressure with a gauge at the pressure sending unit port and that also showed no pressure.

They think posssibly a bad oil pump, or disconnected oil pickup tube, or a blockage someplace. They do not seem to be too sure.

HELP.

Been typically a sending unit, but ... ... ... ... .

I put a gauge plumbed into the 2nd port on top of the oil filter to crosscheck the OEM gauge with.

Both = 0 sounds like an oil pump / oil system failure. Not too common I think.

No oil pressure update

After 10 days, the dealer pulled the oil pan yesterday. They said that they found the gasket between the oil pickup tube and the oil pump had about a 1-inch segment missing. This allowed the pump to pull air instead of oil.

Be sure you get that documented in writing for future problems.

And the bad news is that the engine has to be replaced. One of the bearings on the crankshaft froze up and split. They tell me it will take 7-10 days to get the engine and another 2-4 to replace. So it looks like I am stuck in Canada for a spell :(

It is really great news , I would take a new motor over a bandaged upped one. It will be worth the wait

that sucks... and i agree new engine is better than bandaged one...

Thanks, I have been searching for some good news in all this experience and now I have some. :)

They tell me that this is not a good thing!

I'm glad they are taking care of business. It's worth the extra time to have it done right

DCX really should do something about the oil pressure guage/indicator (0=40) thing.

I am still aghast about the whole synthesized oil pressure readings instead of a functional gauge.

I am not sure of how well they are taking care of business. By the time it is repaired, it will be close to 30 days. So far, the local dealer and Chrysler Service center refuses to give me any assistance with lodging or a rental vehicle.

And they had to balls to charge me for an oil and filter after the first repair.

I would think that oil and filter is a requirement anytime the pan is dropped. I mentioned this to them and they said the truck was due for an oil change anyway. I showed they a receipt where the oil and filter was changed 1,500 miles ago at a Dodge dealer in Oregon. They still refuse to budge.

Right on about the oil pressure gauge. My showed 0-40-0-40 in about 5 second interval.
