Was driving home two nights ago and check gauges alarm sounded. Oil pressure gauge registered 0-psi. Immediately pulled over and shut it down.

Had my truck, 1999 QC-auto, towed to Herb Chambers Dodge in Danvers MA near my home.
They checked it out and said that when the tech started it the oil pressure came right up and the check gauges alarm did not sound.

I picked the truck up this evening and drove it home, all seemed normal.

An hour later I started it to go do an errand and the check gauges alarm sounded and the oil pressure gauge registered 0-psi.
When I picked the truck up the tech said to ignore this problem if it happened again and try to bring the truck in while the condition is occurring as it is probably electrical. So I drove it down the street and did my errand, about three miles down the road the oil pressure gauge climbed at a normal rate to approximately 60-psi which has been the normal reading since new that I have observed.

Has anyone else experienced this same problem, I am still under warranty, 34k miles, but as of now I am not driving the truck anymore so I don't burn the motor which may have already been done!

Thankyou for the quick response. I have another question, is there a Dodge dealer in New England (Southern ME, NH, VT or MA) that is familiar with these quirky problems, ie. , the sending unit, lfit pump problems reflashes for the ECM etc... ?

mtsk,

Not to worry, the same thing happended to me. However, my dealer knew exactly what the problem was as soon as I brought it in. The problem is your sending unit. Have them replace it and reset your error codes and you'll be on your way. Check out the thread below when I freaked about this happening #ad

The new sending units are supposed to not have this problem (that remains to be seen).

Good luck #ad

mtsk, to be safe, check your oil level and make sure your oil filter is not leaking. I'm 99% sure it's your oil pressure sending unit, there have been many posts about those failing so I'm sure that's all it is. I'd tell the dealership to change it out and stop dinkin' around #ad

Good luck

mtsk: Had this happen to me in a '98 12V at a toll booth in Kansas while towing a 25" 5th wheel. A real sickening feeling, ain't it? I'm with the others on this, it was my oil pressure sending unit. Didn't hurt to make sure the oil level was up though.

The same thing happened to me the day I brought it home. They seemed to think it was the computer that screwed things up. I don't think they replaced the sending unit. If they did, they didn't tell me. I had it towed to a local dealer from the freeway where I had coasted to a stop, sickened. . .

Man, that would freak me out. I am installing an Auto Meter "Pro Light" oil pressure light next week. Kind of like a redundant idiot light. But i will definatley notice that.

Don't know if the senders are the same for a properly valved and for an overvalved, but my 12-valve's sender has a threshold of about 18-20 psi. when at low idle, in gear, and the steering "cranked" all the way over, the rpms get down to about 550 and the pressure gets below the sending unit's threshold, it transmits a "zero" to the guage, and dings the bell... unnerving as all git out, but harmless.

Thank you gentlemen for the quick response it is greatly appreciated. I am going back to the Dealer this AM and have them replace the sender or at least give me a new one to install it myself.

If you have a by-pass oil filtration system installed, you can check the return flow to see if it's a true mechanical or just an electrical problem. My oil return is back thru the filler cap. Saved me from a tow back to town out on I-40 late one night.

mtsk,

I dont know if there is decent dealer nearby (I live in Beverly) I took my truck down to Herb Chambers with a list of questions and was not impressed at all by their techs. If you find some place, let me know #ad

I agree, it's your sending unit. Same thing happened to me the day after I purchased my truck, I pulled over, killed the engine, restarted it and I had pressure again. I took it to the dealer a. s. a. p. They told me that for some reason the Cummins is know to do that one time only (if it happens more than one time, bring it in to have the sending unit replaced) Needless to say, it has'nt happened again. and don't worry, from the advise of the Service Man. "You can't Blow-Up Your Cummins" Your engine is set-up so that if it reads high-temp and low pressure, it will trip! or shut itself down before major damage occours! Good luck!!
