Recently my oil pressure gauge has been going to 0 for a few minutes. Then it comes back to normal. I checked for leaks and found none. I checked the codes and got this P1693 and 0523. What does this mean? Can I drive my truck, maybe it is a gauge malfunction?

P 1693= DTC detected in ecm or pcm

0523 Oil pressure voltage to high

My 98 12v had countless oil senders and fuel senders in it as long as I owned it. I got used to hearing the "ding ding ding" chime when it went to zero. I think D/C had a deal with the local stereo shop to sell me a kick'n stereo to cover all the dinging out of my dash.

My guess is if your pressure is at zero and you havent toasted the motor, it has to be the sender. I was told that all the 2nd gen oil senders were junk. I think they finally discovered a grounding problem with my 98, but that was weeks before I sold it. I see it now and then in Chico Calif, but the guy that boought it off the lot isnt friendly as everytime I try to get him to pull over he flipps me off. Too bad for him as I have all the service info along with the paperwork for the SnugTop shell, Firestone ride rites and the LineX is a folder. One more finger and they all go into the burn barrel!

Is the oil pressure sending unit hard to replace? How much am I looking at spending at the dodge place for a new one?

It is not hard to replace. It just screws in on the drivers side of the engine. I don't remember how much they are. Do a search on hear and you should be able to come up with a price.

Cummins #3408428 Mopar #5012991-AB

If you get if from a Cummins distributor if will be cheaper than Mopar unless ask them for a discount on there price. Over on Dave Frits site he has a pictue of where it is-I think.

If I remember right the pressure indication is generated by the PCM and has nothing to do with real oil pressure, it's just what Dodge decided it should look like. I want a direct gauge for mine, though with a 95 I probably don't need it. Check the pressure with a direct gauge.

Go to the Cummins engine dealer for the part. Way cheaper!! The Dodge dealer wanted $300 to change mine including parts. I did it myself in 30 minutes for $50 to $60 including parts. The Cummins part number is 4088390.

I appreciate all the advice I think I will do it myself. I am getting several different part numbers though. Theres not a cummins shop anywhere close to me , does anyone know if I can buy it off the internet.

That part # I put up was on Dave Fritz site. It might be a ole #. I am sure there are some places on the internet you can get it from but I can not think of any at this time.

I just talked to the dealer they are going to replace it under cummins warrenty. The dealership is 45 miles away they said it would be fine to drive it to them. Does this sensor affect the oil pressure if so can I drive it that far. By the way the part from Mopar is $ 213. 00

The sensor is just for the oil press. guage. If you are concerned about the pressure, tap into the top of the filter housing in one of the 1/8 inch holes and check it to be sure. Mine did the same as yours and about caused me a heart attack.

You might want to do a search on this site under oil pressure sending units.

I checked my oil pressure with a mechanical guage. It exactly matched the stock display except for the start up pressure spike. The stock gauge may not react quick enought to see that spike. It's over 80 PSI on mine.

The sensor has nothing to do with it making oil pressure. It just makes your guage read what is going across it. If you got oil pressure there is nothing wrong with driving it that far. If you don't have any oil pressure you will know it. It will get louder. I had one go out on the 91 I had and drove it 30 miles to the dealer. It don't take long to put another one in.

Check your oil with the engine off, them take out the dip stick and start the truck. If the oil preasure is good it will show by going higher up on the dip stick.

I took my truck to the dealer today and they did not change the unit they reflashed the cpu everything seemed fine on the way home what is reflashing

This was a post by Texas Diesel

The standard fix is to reflash your PCM with upgraded code that tells you CPM to write 40PSI on the dash anytime your sender reports oil pressure out of spec. If they touched your truck you have the reflash. If you have any doubts, disconnect the wiring to the sender, if your dash chime sounds a warning and your check gauges light is on you are good. If the gauge says 40PSI (with the sender un hooked) you have the DC fix-a-flash and you have no oil pressure waring system. DC messed up my truck permanently. DC really sucks.

That is exactly why I went ahead with the sender unit replacement after what I read in the TDR. Thank goodness for TDR and all the GREAT MEMBERS!!!
